Full Description
The Reichstag building and its glass dome
The Reichstag was completed in 1894 for the parliament of the German Empire. It burned in 1933, was badly damaged in 1945 and stood half-empty through the Cold War, right beside the Wall. After reunification the architect Norman Foster rebuilt it, and since 1999 it has again been the seat of the Bundestag.
The highlight of any Reichstag tour is the dome: two spiral ramps wind up around a cone of 360 mirrors that reflects daylight into the plenary chamber below. From the top you see the whole city, from the TV Tower to the Tiergarten. Plan for about an hour inside. Visits need advance registration with ID, which is why a Reichstag dome guided tour is the easiest way in.
The plenary chamber and the Bundestag at work
Directly under the dome sits the plenary hall, where the members of the Bundestag debate and vote. The glass floor of the dome lets visitors look down on it, a deliberate symbol of a parliament that works in public view. The huge federal eagle on the wall, nicknamed the fat hen, is one of the best-known images of German politics.
On some dates a short visit to the chamber gallery can be combined with the tour, but this is decided by the Bundestag and is never guaranteed. Our guide uses the building itself to explain how German democracy works today, how the chancellor is elected and why the parliament returned to Berlin from Bonn in 1999.
The government district and the old Wall line
Around the Reichstag lies the Band des Bundes, a line of modern federal buildings that crosses the Spree twice, symbolically joining East and West. You pass the Federal Chancellery, the Paul-Löbe-Haus with its committee rooms and the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus, which holds the parliament library.
Just behind the Reichstag, the Berlin Wall once followed the riverbank, and a row of white crosses remembers people who died trying to cross it. The Brandenburg Gate is only a few minutes away. If you are wondering how to get to the Reichstag, the nearest stops are Bundestag on the U5 line and Berlin Hauptbahnhof.
