Full Description

The Upper Middle Rhine Valley

Between Bingen and Koblenz, the Rhine cuts a deep, winding gorge through the slate hills, a 65-kilometre stretch listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2002. For centuries this was one of Europe's great trade routes, and local lords built dozens of castles on the cliffs to collect tolls from passing ships.

The result is a landscape of more than 40 castles and fortresses, pretty villages and terraced slopes that inspired Romantic poets and painters in the nineteenth century. A Rhine Valley day trip from Frankfurt brings you here in about an hour, and our guide shares the legends and history that make this river so special.

Rhine river cruise past the castles

The highlight of the day is the boat ride through the gorge. From the deck you see castles appear one after another: the ruins of Ehrenfels, the Mouse Tower on its island near Bingen, and the fairy-tale silhouettes of Rheinstein and Reichenstein above the villages. Each has its own story of knights, sieges and rebuilding.

A Rhine river cruise is the best way to appreciate the valley, because many castles are best seen from the water. The best time to visit the Rhine Valley is from May to October, when boats run most often and the slopes are green; spring and early autumn are quieter than midsummer.

Rüdesheim am Rhein

Rüdesheim is one of the most popular towns on the Rhine, with half-timbered houses, narrow lanes and a riverside promenade. The medieval Brömserburg, one of the oldest castles on the river, stands at the edge of the old town, and small museums tell the story of the region's music and traditions.

During your time in Rüdesheim you can stroll the old streets, browse the shops and enjoy lunch in a local restaurant, which is included in this tour. Many visitors ask how to get to Rüdesheim from Frankfurt without a car: this tour is the simplest way, combining the town and the river in one day.

The Niederwald Monument

High above Rüdesheim stands the Niederwald Monument, completed in 1883 to celebrate the founding of the German Empire. The bronze figure of Germania, more than 10 metres tall, holds a crown and sword and looks out over the Rhine towards the west. The platform offers one of the finest views of the valley.

The monument can be reached by a scenic cable car from Rüdesheim or on foot, and another cable car descends on the far side to the village of Assmannshausen. These rides are optional and paid separately, depending on the time available. Our guide will tell you whether they fit into the day's schedule.
