Full Description
The Deutsches Museum on Museumsinsel
The Deutsches Museum was founded in 1903 by the engineer Oskar von Miller and stands on the Museumsinsel, an island in the Isar river close to the centre of Munich. Its main building holds more than 125,000 objects and about 20,000 square metres of exhibition space, which makes it one of the largest technical museums anywhere and a strong answer to the question of whether the Deutsches Museum is worth visiting.
Deutsches Museum tickets here are for an hourly entry slot; after that you stay as long as you like. The museum is normally open daily from around 9:00 to 17:00 with last admission at about 16:30, but hours can change, so check your slot. To get there, take the S-Bahn to Isartor or Rosenheimer Platz, or tram line 16, and walk across the bridge.
Aeronautics, astronautics and transport
The aircraft halls are a highlight for many visitors, with historic aeroplanes, gliders, helicopters and engines that trace the history of flight from early experiments to modern jets. Close by, the astronautics exhibition explains rockets, satellites and space travel, with real hardware and models rather than only text panels.
These halls are large and busy at midday, so a morning slot gives you more room to look up at the aircraft. Allow at least an hour if aviation is the reason for your visit. Because your ticket gives access to all exhibitions and time inside is unlimited, you can come back to these halls after seeing other sections.
Energy, mining, physics and chemistry
The collection includes the first diesel engine, power machines and a full underground mine, built inside the museum so that you can walk through tunnels and see how miners worked. There are also demonstrations in chemistry and physics that show scientific ideas in action, and the museum's live shows and experiments are a good reason to check times when you arrive.
Other well-known parts of the museum include the historic printing presses, the model railway, the microscopy theatre, and one of the world's finest collections of musical instruments. You cannot see everything in one day, so decide on three or four exhibitions before you arrive.
Planning your visit and visiting with children
With 20 permanent exhibitions, hands-on stations and interactive experiments, the museum works for all ages. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult, and there is a dedicated children's area for younger visitors. Your ticket includes a multilingual audio guide that you download through the museum app, so bring headphones and a charged phone.
Some halls may be closed for renovation, so check the museum's current plan when you visit. Pack a light bag, wear comfortable shoes and plan a break. The building is wheelchair accessible, and you can go straight to the admission checkpoint with your voucher instead of joining the ticket queue.
