Overview
This Rhodes catamaran cruise spends a full day on the island's sunny east coast in a small group of no more than 24 guests. We collect you by coach from a set stop near your hotel in Rhodes town, Ixia or Ialysos and bring you to Mandraki Harbour, where the power catamaran leaves at 10:00. The boat anchors at four of the finest swimming spots on the coast: pine-fringed Vagies Bay, long Afandou Beach, sheltered Ladiko Bay and the rocky coves of Kallithea Springs. Full Description
Mandraki Harbour, Rhodes town
Mandraki is the historic harbour of Rhodes town, just outside the walls of the medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Two bronze deer, a stag and a doe, stand on columns at the harbour entrance, three old windmills line the mole, and at its tip rises the fortress of Agios Nikolaos with its lighthouse.
The cruise starts here, with boarding from 09:30 for the 10:00 departure. As the catamaran sails south, you see the walls of the Old Town and the coast unfold, before the boat turns along the east coast, the sunniest and calmest side of Rhodes. In summer the meltemi blows from the north-west, so the east coast is usually more sheltered than the west, which makes it the best side of the island for a boat day.
Vagies Bay and Ladiko Bay
Vagies Bay is one of the most photographed coves on Rhodes: a small, deep inlet near Faliraki where pine trees grow down to the rocks and the water glows emerald and turquoise. Next to it lies Ladiko Bay, a sheltered horseshoe of sand and pebbles with calm, clear water ideal for swimming.
The catamaran anchors at both bays, each for about an hour. Swim from the boat, snorkel along the rocky walls where small fish gather, or swim to the shore if you wish, since all stops are made at anchor. If you are wondering how to get to Vagies Bay without the crowds of the small beach, arriving by boat is the easiest and most beautiful way.
Afandou Beach
Afandou Beach stretches for several kilometres along the east coast below the village of the same name, a long ribbon of sand and fine pebbles backed by fields and orchards. Its open, clean water and gentle shelf make it a favourite with families, and because the beach is so long it rarely feels crowded.
On the power catamaran option, Afandou is the lunch stop. The crew serves a Mediterranean buffet with grilled chicken, pasta, potato, Greek and green salads, tzatziki, hummus, aubergine salad, olives, feta and freshly baked bread, with unlimited soft drinks, juice and water. After lunch there is time for another swim before the catamaran moves on. Halal meals are limited on Rhodes, so tell us your needs when booking and we will advise.
Kallithea Springs
Kallithea Springs is a thermal spa complex on a rocky stretch of coast south of Rhodes town. The healing springs were known in antiquity, and in 1929 a grand spa was built here with domes, colonnades, palm gardens and pebble-mosaic floors in an eastern-inspired style. Restored in the 2000s, it is now one of the most elegant sights on the island.
The catamaran anchors in the small coves below the complex for the last swim stop of the day, usually 45 minutes to an hour. The water is crystal clear, with rocks, small sea caves and plenty of fish, making it the best snorkelling spot of the cruise. Is Kallithea Springs worth visiting? Seeing its domes and colonnades from the water is a highlight before the short sail back to Mandraki.
