Full Description
Pella archaeological site
Pella lies about 40 kilometres west of Thessaloniki, around 45 minutes by coach. Around 400 BC it replaced Aigai as the capital of the Macedonian kingdom and grew into a large planned city with a grid of streets, a vast agora, workshops, sanctuaries and wealthy houses. In ancient times it stood beside a lagoon connected to the sea, which has long since silted up into the fertile plain you see today.
Walking through the site, you see the foundations of houses with columned courtyards, some still with their original pebble floors laid in place. Plan about an hour here. The ground is flat but unpaved, so comfortable shoes help, and in summer the morning visit avoids the strongest heat. Is Pella worth visiting? For anyone curious about ancient Greece beyond Athens, yes.
Pella Archaeological Museum
Opened in 2009, the Pella Archaeological Museum is a modern building next to the site, designed around the layout of an ancient house. Its star pieces are the pebble mosaics lifted from the city's grand homes: hunting scenes with lions and deer, and a god riding a panther, made with thousands of natural river pebbles in subtle shades and outlined with strips of lead and clay.
The galleries also show daily life in the royal capital: pottery, jewellery, figurines, coins, tools and objects from the agora and the houses. The visit takes about 45 minutes. Your escort handles the logistics and the skip-the-line assistance, while commentary inside comes from the panels, which are clear and in English. Entrance tickets are paid in cash on site.
Museum of the Royal Tombs of Aigai, Vergina
Vergina, ancient Aigai, was the first capital of the Macedonian kings and remained their royal burial ground. In the late 1970s archaeologists excavated a huge mound here and found several royal tombs, two of them untouched for more than two thousand years. The Museum of the Royal Tombs was built inside a reconstructed mound, so you walk into a dim, protective chamber where the painted tomb facades stand where they were found.
Inside are the treasures discovered in the tombs: a gold casket decorated with the 16-rayed star that became the symbol of Macedonia, a delicate gold oak wreath, armour, ivory and silver vessels, and fragile wall paintings. Photography is not allowed inside. Plan about an hour. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most moving stop of any Vergina day trip from Thessaloniki.
The New Museum of Aigai
Opened in 2023 near the restored palace of Aigai, the New Museum of Aigai presents the wider story of the ancient capital. Its galleries hold monumental sculpture, the long spears and helmets of Macedonian soldiers, finely painted pottery, banquet vessels from aristocratic households and the rich burials of royal women, complete with gold jewellery and insignia.
A temporary coin exhibition often shows issues from across the Hellenistic world, and large windows connect the galleries with the landscape of the foothills. You spend about 45 minutes here after lunch. The museum is spacious and air-conditioned, a welcome break on hot summer afternoons, and the setting at the foot of the Pieria mountains is beautiful in spring and autumn.
The Macedonian plain and the lunch stop
Between the sites, the coach crosses the wide plain of central Macedonia, one of the most fertile farming regions of Greece, with peach and apple orchards, cotton fields and the Vermio mountains on the horizon. The route passes close to the town of Veria, known for its old quarter and Byzantine churches, before reaching Vergina in the foothills.
The lunch stop is at a traditional Greek tavern near the sites; the meal itself is not included, so you order what you like. Halal food is limited here, though grilled fish, salads, vegetable dishes and cheese pies are always available; central Thessaloniki has more halal options in the evening. The best time to visit Vergina and Pella is spring or autumn, when the plain is green and the temperature mild.
