Full Description

From Antigua Guatemala to Pacaya

Pacaya rises south of Guatemala City, about an hour and a half by road from Antigua Guatemala, and it is the most popular half-day volcano trip from the colonial city. The drive leaves the Panchoy valley, climbs through coffee farms and small towns and crosses the highlands of Escuintla, with views of the volcanoes that ring Antigua behind you.

Our driver collects you at 06:00 for the morning tour or at 14:00 for the afternoon tour. The morning usually has clearer skies and cooler air, while the afternoon lets you walk down in the golden evening light and see the cone glow as dusk falls. Either way, this Antigua Guatemala day trip fits neatly into a morning or an afternoon, leaving the rest of your day free in the city.

Pacaya Volcano National Park and San Francisco de Sales

The hike starts at the village of San Francisco de Sales, at the entrance to Pacaya Volcano National Park, a protected area created in 2001 that covers the volcano, its forests and the nearby crater lake of Calderas. You pay the park entrance fee at the gate, meet your guide and set off on a wide trail that climbs gently at first through the trees.

Local villagers often wait at the start with walking sticks and horses, which can help on the steeper parts, but they are not included and are arranged directly with them. The guide explains how the volcano has shaped life in the surrounding villages, whose families grow coffee and maize in the rich volcanic soil and now earn much of their living from visitors to the park.

The forest trail up the slopes of Pacaya

The trail climbs about 500 metres in roughly an hour and a half, first through pine and oak forest and then across open slopes with long views over the valleys. On clear days you can see Lake Amatitlán to the north and the triple line of Agua, Fuego and Acatenango to the west, and the guide stops regularly for breathers and explanations.

The Pacaya volcano hike from Antigua is a moderate walk rather than a climb: the path is wide, but it is steep in places and the volcanic gravel can be slippery, especially on the way down. Good shoes with grip, a light rain jacket and water make it far more pleasant. Most fit adults and children who are used to walking manage it comfortably.

The lava fields and the active cone

Pacaya, at 2,552 metres, has been almost continuously active since 1965. Major eruptions in 2010, 2014 and 2021 sent rivers of lava down its flanks, and the trail ends on these black fields of cooled lava, a rough landscape of twisted rock, cracks and small vents where warm air still rises from the ground. Above you the cone smokes and, on some days, throws out small bursts of ash.

For safety the guided route stops at a viewpoint on the lava fields rather than climbing to the crater rim, which is closed to visitors. This is the best part of the day for photos, with the jagged lava in the foreground and the cone behind. Is Pacaya worth visiting? For a real volcano experience in a single morning or afternoon, it is hard to beat.

Marshmallow roasting and the walk down

The most famous moment of any Pacaya tour is roasting marshmallows on the volcano. The guide finds a crack in the lava where the heat from below is strong enough to toast a marshmallow on a stick within a minute or two, and the marshmallows are provided. Children love it, and it is a vivid way to feel how close the molten rock still is.

After time on the lava fields you walk back down the same trail to San Francisco de Sales, a descent of about an hour, and our vehicle drives you back to your hotel area in Antigua Guatemala. The whole tour takes about six hours, so the morning departure is back by lunchtime and the afternoon departure returns in the evening.
