Full Description
Széchenyi rakpart pier and the Pest embankment
The dinner cruise leaves from Széchenyi rakpart 2, on the Pest embankment of District V between the Chain Bridge and the Parliament. This stretch of riverbank faces Castle Hill directly, so the view begins before you even step on board. Nearby is Széchenyi Square with its Art Nouveau facades and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and a little upriver the Shoes on the Danube Bank, a quiet memorial of iron shoes to the victims of 1944 and 1945.
Tram 2, which runs along the embankment, stops a few minutes away, and Kossuth Square metro station on line 2 is also within walking distance. Our tip is to arrive 20 to 30 minutes before the 7:30 pm boarding, so you can settle at your table and watch the city lights come on over the water before the boat casts off.
The Hungarian Parliament at night
Shortly after departure the boat glides past the Hungarian Parliament, the largest building in the country. Completed in 1904 in Gothic Revival style, it is 268 metres long, has a central dome 96 metres high and holds the Holy Crown of Hungary. Its many spires, arches and statues make it the city's most photographed landmark, and at night the whole facade is lit in warm gold.
From a dinner table with floor-to-ceiling windows, the Parliament seems to float on the river. This is the moment to head up to the rooftop deck if it is open, because the reflection in the water makes the best photos of the evening. Many visitors who book a Danube dinner cruise do so precisely for this view, which you cannot get from either bank.
Buda Castle and Fisherman's Bastion
Across the water rises Castle Hill, crowned by the long Baroque Royal Palace, today the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. To the north stand the white neo-Romanesque turrets of Fisherman's Bastion, built at the turn of the twentieth century, and the slender spire of Matthias Church with its glazed roof tiles. Together with the Danube banks, the Castle District is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As the boat passes beneath the hill during dinner, the illuminated walls and terraces look like a stage set behind the band. If you have not yet explored the castle on foot, the cruise is a good preview: by day the Castle District is easy to reach by funicular or bus 16, and the terraces of the bastion give the reverse view back over the river and the Parliament.
Elisabeth Bridge, Gellért Hill and Liberty Bridge
South of the Chain Bridge the boat passes the white suspension span of Elisabeth Bridge, rebuilt in 1964 after its predecessor was destroyed in the war. Above it rises Gellért Hill, named after Saint Gerard, with the Citadel fortress and the Liberty Statue on its summit. A small waterfall and his statue mark the place on the hillside facing the river.
Next comes Liberty Bridge, the green cantilever bridge opened in 1896, topped by mythical turul birds. On the Pest side you see the Central Market Hall's coloured tiled roof and the glass curve of the Bálna building. The boat usually turns in this area and heads back north, giving guests on the other side of the dining room their turn at the best views.
Margaret Island and the northern stretch
On the northern part of the route the cruise reaches Margaret Island, a green island about 2.5 kilometres long in the middle of the Danube. Named after Saint Margaret, a royal princess who lived in a Dominican convent here in the thirteenth century, it is today a car-free park with a musical fountain, a historic water tower from 1911, rose gardens and the ruins of medieval churches.
At night the island is a dark silhouette between the lit banks, and the yellow Margaret Bridge, with its unusual angled shape, marks the turning point. The return leg takes you back past the Parliament and Castle Hill a second time, often with the band at its liveliest, before the boat docks at the same pier where you started.
