Full Description
Pisa and the Leaning Tower
Pisa's Piazza dei Miracoli, the Square of Miracles, is a broad lawn holding the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the famous Leaning Tower, all in white marble and all part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. The tower is the cathedral's bell tower, begun in the twelfth century, and it started to lean while still under construction because the ground was soft.
You have about an hour and a half here, enough to walk to the square, take the classic photo and look at the cathedral from outside. Climbing the tower and entering the monuments are not included, so book those separately if you want to, and note that a Leaning Tower day trip from Rome is a long trip for a short stop.
Florence: the panoramic introduction
Florence was the centre of the Italian Renaissance, and its historic centre is compact enough to see the main sights in a few hours. Your tour leader introduces the city with a panoramic walk that passes Piazza del Duomo, with its cathedral and Brunelleschi's dome, Mercato Nuovo, known for the bronze boar, and Ponte Vecchio, the medieval bridge lined with jewellery shops.
After the introduction you have around two and a half hours in Florence. If you are asking whether Florence is worth a day trip from Rome, the answer is yes as a first look, because the city is walkable and full of masterpieces, though a longer stay lets you enter the museums.
The Florence audio guide and free time
The standard option includes an audio guide for Florence that you follow on your smartphone, so you can discover hidden corners, artistic treasures and stories at your own pace. Download the audio guide before the trip, and remember that it covers Florence only and not Pisa.
Free time is best spent on the main piazzas and along the river, with a stop for lunch or a coffee. Museum tickets such as the Uffizi or the Accademia are not included, and popular sites often need advance booking, so decide early what you want to enter.
The journey: Rome to Tuscany by coach
The coach leaves Rome in the early morning and travels through Lazio and Tuscany, with about four and a half hours to Pisa. The tour leader gives live commentary in English and Spanish on the history of Tuscany, the birthplace of the Italian language.
The day is long, with roughly four hours of driving back to Rome in the evening, so it works best for travellers who do not mind time on the bus. Bring a charged phone, headphones and snacks, and expect an evening arrival back at the Tiburtina area.
