Full Description
Wadi Rum Protected Area
Wadi Rum is a vast desert of sand valleys and sheer sandstone and granite mountains in southern Jordan, often called the Valley of the Moon. It was listed by UNESCO in 2011 as a mixed natural and cultural site, protected both for its landscape and for the rock art and inscriptions that record thousands of years of human life. Jordan's highest peak, Jabal Umm ad Dami, rises on its southern edge.
Is Wadi Rum worth visiting? For many travellers it is the most memorable landscape in Jordan, and the only way to see its distances is by 4x4 with a local Bedouin driver. On this Wadi Rum jeep tour, five hours give you time to reach the classic sites and still stop wherever the light is good.
Khazali Canyon and Lawrence's Spring
Khazali Canyon is a narrow cleft in a mountain wall whose cool, shaded sides are covered with rock carvings: human figures, animals and footprints, alongside Thamudic and Nabataean inscriptions left by the desert's early travellers. You can step into the opening of the canyon to see the carvings at close range, a short visit of about 20 minutes.
Lawrence's Spring is a small spring on the slope of a mountain above the valley floor, which for centuries supplied water to Bedouin herds and passing caravans. A short scramble up from the jeep leads to wide views over the red sand and the mountains beyond, and often to camels resting below. Both stops show how water and shade shaped life in this desert.
The red sand dunes and sandboarding
Wind has piled deep red sand against several of Wadi Rum's cliffs, and the colour comes from iron oxide in the eroded sandstone. Climbing a dune barefoot is part of the experience, and from the top you see the valleys open out in every direction, with the mountains standing like islands in a red sea of sand. Morning sand is cool underfoot; by midday in summer it can be hot.
Sandboarding is included: your guide brings the board and shows you how to stand or sit for your first run down the slope. It suits children and adults alike, and the soft sand makes falls harmless. Allow around 30 to 40 minutes here, longer if your group wants several runs or photographs in the low light.
Rock bridges and wind-carved sandstone
Erosion has shaped Wadi Rum's sandstone into natural arches and odd forms. Rock bridges such as the Little Bridge and the higher Umm Fruth bridge can be climbed with care for a classic photograph, and your guide shows the easiest way up and down. Nearby, the so-called Mushroom Rock stands alone on the sand like a giant toadstool.
These stops are where the scale of the desert becomes clear: walls of rock hundreds of metres high, silence and a sky that feels close. The exact route depends on your start time, the season and the sand conditions, so your guide chooses the order of stops to give you the best light and avoid crowds.
Sunset, stargazing and your night at a Bedouin camp
With the 13:00 start, the tour ends at a sunset viewpoint where the cliffs turn orange and then deep red. You then arrive at a Bedouin camp inside the protected area, where you have your own tent, Bedouin tea with sage, cardamom coffee and a traditional dinner shared with the other guests.
After dinner the camp gathers around the bonfire, and away from city lights the sky fills with stars; on moonless nights the Milky Way is clearly visible, and your guide can point out the main constellations. A Wadi Rum overnight is the best way to feel the silence of the desert, and in the morning breakfast is served before you head back to the village.
How to get to Wadi Rum and the best time to visit
Wadi Rum Village lies about one hour by road from Aqaba, around one and a half to two hours from Petra and about four hours from Amman. Hotel pickup is not included in this tour, so plan to reach the village by your start time; our team can help you arrange a transfer if you ask when booking.
The best time to visit Wadi Rum is spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, with warm days and mild nights. Summer days are very hot, which makes the afternoon start more comfortable, while winter nights can drop close to freezing, so bring warm clothes for the camp.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

It is a small-group tour limited to eight participants, so you may share the jeep and the camp evening with other guests. At the camp you sleep in your own private tent.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
The guide adapts the order of stops to the light, the season and the group, and is happy to give more time at a viewpoint or the dunes when possible. The overall length of the tour stays around five hours.
How many people can join?
Up to eight participants per group. Families and friends can book several places together and stay in the same group.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person, with separate categories for adults and children. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your date.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. You meet your guide in Wadi Rum Village. Our team can help you arrange a transfer from Aqaba, Petra or Amman if you need one.

Is there a two-night option?
Yes. You can choose the same jeep tour with two nights at the Bedouin camp for a slower stay in the desert.
How long is the tour?
The jeep tour lasts about five hours, followed by the evening and night at the camp; the experience ends after breakfast the next morning.
