Full Description

Trakai Island Castle

Trakai Island Castle is the most photographed landmark in Lithuania: a red-brick Gothic fortress rising from a small island in Lake Galvė, reached by wooden footbridges. It was built in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries by the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, at a time when their state stretched from the Baltic to the Black Sea, and it served as a ducal residence where foreign envoys were received.

Damaged in the wars of the seventeenth century, the castle fell into ruin and was rebuilt in stages from the 1950s to the 1980s. Today it houses the Trakai History Museum, with the ducal palace halls, a courtyard, a tall keep and collections of coins, weapons, glass and everyday objects. Is Trakai Castle worth visiting? Yes, both from outside and inside; plan about an hour for the museum. Tickets are bought at the castle and are not included in this tour.

Lake Galvė and the Trakai lakes

Lake Galvė is the largest and deepest of the lakes around Trakai, dotted with wooded islands and fringed by reeds and birch trees. The town of Trakai sits on a narrow strip of land between Galvė, Luka and Totoriškės lakes, which is why water is never far from view and why the setting feels so peaceful.

In summer the lake is busy with sailing boats, kayaks and pedal boats that you can rent near the castle bridge, and short boat rides circle the island for a different angle on the walls. In winter, when the lake freezes, the castle stands above a white plain. The best time to visit Trakai is from late May to September for boating and long evenings, though autumn colours and snowy winter days are beautiful too. Benches along the shore are perfect for a quiet break.

Peninsula Castle and Trakai Old Town

Before the island fortress, the main stronghold of Trakai was the Peninsula Castle, built in the fourteenth century on the neck of land between Lakes Luka and Galvė. It was one of the largest castles in Lithuania, and today its partly restored walls, towers and grassy courtyard form a quiet park where you can walk the ramparts and enjoy views over the water.

Nearby stands the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, founded in the early fifteenth century and later rebuilt in baroque style, known for a revered icon of the Virgin. The Old Town around it is small and easy to explore on foot, and the audio commentary on the drive explains how Trakai lost its role as a capital to Vilnius but kept its historic character. This Trakai day trip from Vilnius leaves you enough time to combine both castles.

The Karaite heritage of Trakai

Trakai is the heart of the Karaim, or Karaites, a small Turkic-speaking community brought here from Crimea by the Grand Dukes at the end of the fourteenth century to serve as castle guards. Their descendants still live in Trakai, and Karaimų Street is lined with their distinctive wooden houses, painted in bright colours, with their gable ends facing the street.

You can see the kenesa, the Karaite prayer house, and visit a small ethnographic exhibition about their language, faith and crafts. Lunch is not included, but Trakai is the best place in Lithuania to try kibinai, crescent-shaped baked pastries traditionally filled with meat, with vegetable and other fillings also available in local cafés. Other communities, including Tatars, Poles, Russians and Jews, also settled here, giving Trakai its rich, multicultural history.

From Vilnius to Trakai

The tour starts in central Vilnius, Lithuania's capital, near Cathedral Square and the white Vilnius Cathedral with its free-standing bell tower. The minibus heads west for about 28 kilometres, around 40 minutes, through the green countryside of Trakai Historical National Park, created to protect the castles, lakes, forests and traditional villages of the area.

On the way an audio commentary in several languages introduces the history of the Grand Duchy, the castles and the Karaites, so you arrive knowing what to look for. How to get to Trakai from Vilnius without planning bus timetables is a common question, and this tour solves it with simple transport both ways. After your free time, the minibus returns to central Vilnius, about four hours after departure, in time for an afternoon in the Old Town.
