Le Morne

Plan Le Morne with Haqqi Tours: day tours, private airport transfers, attraction tickets and packages, run by our own team and confirmed on WhatsApp in Arabic or English.

At first light, the great basalt mass of Le Morne Brabant rises from the lagoon like the prow of a ship, its cliffs glowing red and gold above the palms. Kites are still folded on the sand, the water inside the reef is glassy and pale turquoise, and fishermen pole their boats across the shallows. Beyond the reef the ocean thunders, while the mountain stands guard over the south-western tip of Mauritius.

Le Morne at first sight

Le Morne is the island's most dramatic landscape and one of its most meaningful places. The mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sheltered escaped enslaved people who made its caves and summit their refuge, and it is now a symbol of freedom. Below it lie one of the world's great kitesurfing lagoons and fine beaches, while the hills inland lead to the coloured earth and the waterfall of Chamarel.

Why include Le Morne in your itinerary?

  • A mountain with a powerful story. Le Morne Brabant is both a stunning natural landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site honouring the resistance of the maroons, and its guided hike rewards you with one of the finest views in the Indian Ocean.
  • World-class kitesurfing and a perfect lagoon. Steady trade winds and a vast, shallow lagoon make Le Morne one of the world's best kitesurfing spots, with schools for beginners, while calmer corners are ideal for swimming and paddling.
  • The wild south-west on your doorstep. Chamarel's Seven Coloured Earth and waterfall, the Black River Gorges National Park and the scenic southern coast road are all within a short drive, combining beach days with mountains, forests and viewpoints.

Signature experiences in Le Morne

Hiking Le Morne Brabant

The trail up Le Morne Brabant climbs through forest to a viewpoint, then continues up a steep, rocky section towards the summit, rewarding you with views over the lagoon, the reef and the south-west coast. The lower section is the easier part, while the upper climb is steep and best done with an experienced guide. Start early, wear proper shoes, and we arrange a qualified hiking guide for you.

Kitesurfing and the Lagoon

Le Morne's lagoon is shallow, wide and swept by steady trade winds, especially from May to October, making it one of the world's great kitesurfing spots. Beginners learn safely in waist-deep water with certified instructors, while experts head for the famous reef waves. Non-kiters can swim, paddle or simply watch the colourful kites. We arrange lessons with licensed schools.

Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth and Waterfall

In the hills above Le Morne, Chamarel's Seven Coloured Earth is a small area of rippled dunes in shades of red, brown, violet and blue-green, formed from weathered volcanic rock. Nearby, the Chamarel waterfall plunges about a hundred metres into a forested gorge. Giant tortoises live in the park, and we include both sites in our guided day tours of the south-west.

The Underwater Waterfall from the Air

Off the south-western tip of Le Morne, sand and silt flowing over the edge of the reef create the illusion of a waterfall plunging into the depths of the ocean. It can only be properly seen from the air, and a scenic helicopter or seaplane flight reveals it together with the mountain, the lagoon and the reef. We can arrange a scenic flight for a truly unforgettable view.

Île aux Bénitiers and the Black River Gorges

Catamarans and speedboats cross the lagoon to Île aux Bénitiers, a small palm-covered island, stopping at the striking Crystal Rock and often meeting dolphins on the way. Inland, the Black River Gorges National Park protects native forest and waterfalls, with viewpoints and trails through deep valleys. We combine these in our boat trips and guided day tours.

Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Le Morne

Le Morne Peninsula

Most visitors stay on the peninsula itself, where resort hotels line the beaches beneath the mountain, with the lagoon in front and Le Morne Brabant behind. It is peaceful, secluded and beautiful, ideal for couples, families and kitesurfers. Restaurants are mostly inside the hotels, so a car or driver is useful for exploring beyond.

La Gaulette

Just north of the peninsula, the small village of La Gaulette has guesthouses, apartments, local shops and restaurants, with views of the mountain and easy access to the kitesurf spots. It is relaxed and authentic, and suits independent travellers and kiters who prefer a village atmosphere to a resort.

Chamarel

In the green hills above the coast, Chamarel is a scattered village of farms, small lodges and countryside restaurants, close to the coloured earth and the waterfall. It is cooler and quieter than the coast, perfect for nature lovers seeking views, fresh air and a different side of the island, twenty to thirty minutes from the beach.

Baie du Cap and the Southern Coast

East of Le Morne, the coast road winds past Baie du Cap and the Maconde viewpoint, a rocky outcrop above the waves, towards the cliffs of the south. The area is wild, rural and little visited, with simple guesthouses and fishing villages, suited to travellers who want solitude and dramatic scenery.

How long to stay in Le Morne and how to pair it

Recommended stay

We recommend four to five nights in Le Morne. Spend one morning hiking Le Morne Brabant, one day in Chamarel and the Black River Gorges, and one on a boat trip to Île aux Bénitiers. The remaining days are for the lagoon, kitesurfing lessons or simply relaxing. Add a scenic flight to see the underwater waterfall from above.

How to pair it

Le Morne pairs naturally with Flic en Flac, about thirty minutes north along the west coast, for dolphins and Casela, and with Mahebourg, about an hour to an hour and a quarter east along the southern coast road, for Blue Bay. A seven-day stay combines Le Morne and Grand Baie. In ten days, add Trou d'Eau Douce. A fourteen-day journey can circle the island, including Port Louis.

Best time to visit Le Morne and the rhythm of the day

Best months

The best time for beaches and hiking in Le Morne is from May to December, when the weather is drier and cooler. Kitesurfers come from May to October for the strongest, steadiest winds. September to December offers sunshine and calmer days for swimming. January to April is hot and humid and falls in the cyclone season, with occasional heavy rain on the mountain.

The daily rhythm

Le Morne's day starts early. Hikers set off at dawn to climb the mountain before the heat, and boats leave in the morning calm. By late morning the trade winds rise and kites fill the sky above the lagoon. Afternoons are for the beach or a drive up to Chamarel, and evenings end with the sun setting behind the reef.

On-the-ground logistics in Le Morne

Arrival

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport lies at Plaine Magnien in the south-east, about an hour from Le Morne by road, via the central plateau or along the scenic southern coast. Flights arrive from Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Our private airport transfers meet you on arrival and take you straight to your hotel on the peninsula.

Getting around

Le Morne is spread out, with hotels separated by beaches and the mountain, so walking is mostly limited to the shore. Buses are infrequent along the south-west coast. Taxis are available through hotels, and car hire is possible, driving on the left on winding roads. A private car with driver arranged by our team is ideal for Chamarel, the Black River Gorges and the southern coast.

Local etiquette tip

Le Morne Brabant is a place of memory for Mauritians, so visit the mountain and the Slave Route monument at its foot with respect. On public beaches, wear swimwear only on the sand and cover up elsewhere. Kitesurfers should respect the zones for swimmers and follow local rules on the water. Where should first-time visitors stay in Le Morne?

First-time visitors usually stay on the Le Morne peninsula, in a resort hotel between the lagoon and the mountain. Our team can suggest the right hotel and arrange your private airport transfer.

Can Le Morne be done as a day trip, or does it need an overnight stay?

Le Morne and Chamarel can be visited as a long day trip from Flic en Flac, but the mountain hike starts at dawn and the lagoon is best enjoyed slowly.
