Full Description

Zaandam and its stacked green houses

The day begins with a 30-minute drive to Zaandam, the main town of the Zaan region just north of Amsterdam. Its renewed centre is known for a striking building that looks like dozens of traditional Zaan houses piled on top of each other, each painted in the deep green that local carpenters once used for wooden facades. The design celebrates the timber houses that lined the river Zaan for centuries.

You have about 30 minutes here for photos and a short look around the centre, with its canal-side square and modern shopping streets. The Zaan houses copied in the building were built of wood because the soft, wet ground could not carry heavy brick, and their green paint and white trim became the signature of the region. It is a playful first stop that sets the scene for the historic village a few minutes away.

Zaanse Schans windmills, clogs and cheese

Twenty minutes later you reach Zaanse Schans, an open-air heritage village on the banks of the Zaan. In the seventeenth century this was one of the first industrial landscapes in the world, with hundreds of windmills sawing timber and grinding oil seeds, spices and paint pigments. From the 1960s historic houses and mills were moved here to preserve them, and several mills still work today.

With your guide you visit a wooden shoe workshop, where a craftsman shows how a block of poplar becomes a clog, and you can try a pair on for size. At the cheese farm you learn how Gouda-style cheese is made and enjoy cheese samples. Then there is free time to photograph the mills from the dyke. This Zaanse Schans and Giethoorn day trip keeps the windmill museum optional, with its entry at your own cost.

The IJsselmeer and the reclaimed land of Flevoland

The drive to Giethoorn takes about an hour and a half and is a sightseeing route in its own right. You cross Flevoland, the youngest province of the Netherlands, made almost entirely of land pumped dry from the sea in the second half of the twentieth century. Long straight roads, rows of poplars, wind turbines and wide fields show how the Dutch turned water into farmland.

Along the way you pass the IJsselmeer, a huge freshwater lake that was once the salty Zuiderzee until the Afsluitdijk dam closed it off in 1932. Your guide explains how dykes, pumps and polders keep a large part of the country below sea level dry, and why water management shaped Dutch history. It is a good moment to rest in the comfort of the small vehicle before the highlight of the day.

Giethoorn and the electric boat ride

Giethoorn, in the province of Overijssel, is the village people call the Venice of the North. It was founded in the thirteenth century, and its canals and lakes were created by centuries of peat digging. The old centre has no car roads, so thatched farmhouses stand on garden islands linked by wooden arch bridges, and boats glide past the doors.

You spend about three hours here. After a guided introduction, you board a small open electric boat for a one-hour ride along the canals, with your guide sharing stories about the village and the peat cutters who shaped it. Then enjoy free time to stroll the canal path, take photos from the bridges or have lunch at your own cost. The best time to visit Giethoorn is spring or early autumn, when gardens bloom and paths are calmer.
