Full Description

The Dom Tower: Utrecht's 700-year-old landmark

The Dom Tower was built between 1321 and 1382 as the bell tower of St Martin's Cathedral, and at 112 metres it is still the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. Its Gothic design, with a square base and an elegant open lantern on top, inspired many towers across the country. For centuries it was also a lookout over the flat land around Utrecht, and the city still uses it as its defining image.

In 1674 a violent storm destroyed the cathedral nave, but the tower stood firm, leaving the strange gap that is now Dom Square between the tower and the surviving church. Is the Dom Tower worth visiting? If you enjoy history and views, absolutely: few places explain a city so well, and the climb itself is part of the story as you rise through the stone heart of the medieval monument.

Inside the tower: chapels and great bells

Because the Dom Tower can only be visited on a guided tour, your guide sets a comfortable pace and stops at key levels. Lower in the tower you pass vaulted medieval chapels once used by the bishops of Utrecht, with thick walls and narrow windows that show how solid the structure is. Each stop is a chance to catch your breath and hear about the builders, the storms and the fires the tower survived.

Higher up you reach the chamber of the great bells, cast in the early sixteenth century and still rung by hand by volunteer bell-ringers on special occasions. Above them a carillon plays tunes over the old town at set times. Seeing the huge bells and timber frames up close is one of the most impressive moments of the climb, and the guide explains how they have marked the rhythm of city life for centuries.

The view from the top

After 465 steps you step out onto the gallery at the top, with the whole city spread out beneath you. Below lie the red roofs of the old town, the curve of the Oudegracht with its wharves, the green ring of outer canals and parks, and the tall roofs of churches and old university buildings. Beyond the city the flat Dutch countryside stretches to the horizon, crossed by rivers, rail lines and meadows.

On very clear days distant city skylines can appear on the horizon, which is why the tower is a favourite for photographers. The best time to visit the Dom Tower for views is a bright morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft and the shadows bring out the shapes of the old streets. Take your time at the top before the guide leads the group back down.

Planning your climb and what is nearby

Dom Tower tickets give entry with the guided tour, which lasts about an hour. Tours start from the tourist information office at Domplein 9 between 10:30 and 16:00. How to get to the Dom Tower: from Utrecht Central Station it is about a 10 to 15-minute stroll through the old town, and the tower is visible from almost every street, so it is easy to find.

The climb is steep and narrow, with no lift, so it is not suitable for people with reduced mobility; wear flat shoes and leave large bags behind. Afterwards, explore the rest of Dom Square: DOMunder beneath your feet reveals the Roman fort and cathedral foundations, the cloister garden beside the Dom Church is a quiet corner, and the boarding quays for canal cruises on the Oudegracht are only a few minutes away.
