Full Description

The National Kiwi Hatchery in Rotorua

The National Kiwi Hatchery is a conservation centre in Rotorua that hatches and rears kiwi as part of a national programme to save the species. Kiwi are flightless, largely nocturnal birds found only in New Zealand, and they have long been under pressure from introduced predators such as stoats and cats. If you are searching for a Kiwi Encounter tour in Rotorua, this is the guided version, with a conservation expert rather than a self-guided walk.

Wild kiwi chicks have poor odds of survival, so eggs are collected from the wild, hatched in safe conditions and looked after until the young birds are large enough to defend themselves. The hatchery is run by a charitable trust, and your fee goes back into that work.

The hatching and rearing rooms

The first part of the tour takes you behind the scenes. Your guide shows where eggs are incubated, explains how staff monitor each egg and how the chicks are raised in their first weeks. A kiwi egg is huge for the size of the bird, one of the largest relative to body size of any bird, and chicks hatch fully feathered and ready to feed themselves.

Egg and chick viewing is seasonal, usually from September to March, so the best time to visit the hatchery for chicks is spring and summer. Outside those months you still hear the full story and finish with the live birds. Note that photography and flash are not allowed inside.

The nocturnal kiwi house

The tour ends in the nocturnal house, a dim, purpose-built space that reverses day and night so the birds are active while you visit. Your eyes need a minute to adjust, and then a kiwi appears, probing the soil with its long bill for insects and worms. Seeing a live kiwi is very rare in the wild, so this is the reason many visitors come.

The house is open for viewing all year round. Please keep quiet and still, since kiwi are shy and sensitive to noise, and follow the no-flash and no-photography rules that protect the birds. Ask your guide about the individual birds and how they came to the hatchery.

Planning your visit: times, check-in and getting there

Departures are at 10:45, 12:45 and 14:15, and the tour lasts one hour. Please check in 15 minutes before your departure time at the Agrodome check-in area, from where a short shuttle takes you to the hatchery. To work out how to get to the National Kiwi Hatchery from central Rotorua, use a taxi or hire car to the Agrodome, as hotel pickup is not included.

Children under five are not allowed in the facility for the wellbeing of the birds. Food and drinks are not included. Combine the tour with other Rotorua sights the same day, since it is short and easy to fit around a geothermal park visit.
