Full Description
Guna Yala and the road to Carti
The San Blas Islands, officially Guna Yala, are a chain of hundreds of small coral islands strung along Panama's Caribbean coast. Since 1938 the area has been an autonomous territory governed by the Guna people through their own congresses, which is why visitors pay a separate entrance fee and why the islands have stayed so unspoilt: no high-rise hotels, just palm trees, white sand, fishing canoes and small villages of thatched houses.
How to get to San Blas? From Panama City the only road is the winding route through the forested mountains of the Continental Divide to the port of Carti, about two and a half to three hours by 4x4, followed by a 25 to 30 minute boat ride. That is why a San Blas day trip from Panama City starts so early. Our shared 4x4 handles the steep curves while you watch the jungle wake up.
Isla Perro and its shipwreck
The first stop is Isla Perro, whose name means Dog Island, one of the most popular islands in the archipelago thanks to its palm-lined beach and the shipwreck lying in shallow water just offshore. The rusted hull, now covered with coral and sponges, is only a short swim from the sand, and it attracts shoals of tropical fish such as sergeant majors, parrotfish and blue tangs, as well as the occasional ray.
You spend about an hour and a half here, enough to snorkel around the wreck, swim in water that is warm all year and relax in the shade of the coconut palms. Shared snorkelling equipment is available in limited quantities, so if you have your own mask and snorkel, bring them along. Please do not stand on coral or take anything from the reef; this marine life is protected by the Guna community.
The Natural Pool: wading through turquoise water
Next, the boat stops at the Natural Pool, a shallow sandbank in the middle of the sea where the water is only waist or knee deep and glows in shades of turquoise and aquamarine. It feels like standing in a giant swimming pool far from any shore, and it is one of the most photographed places in the San Blas Islands.
On the sandy bottom you will often see orange and red cushion starfish. They are delicate animals, so admire and photograph them in the water without touching or lifting them, as taking them out of the sea can harm them. Is San Blas worth visiting? Moments like this one, standing in clear Caribbean water with palm islands on the horizon, are exactly why travellers come to Panama's Caribbean coast.
Isla Misdup: island lunch and a lazy afternoon
Lunch is served on Isla Misdup, a small, picture-perfect island with soft white sand and calm shallows on all sides. The Guna hosts prepare a freshly cooked meal with a choice of fish, chicken or a vegetarian option in Caribbean style, and a soft drink or bottled water is included. An optional lobster upgrade is available outside the closed season from March to May.
After lunch there is time to lie on the beach, swim in the clear shallows or simply enjoy the quiet. With no roads, no cars and only the sound of the waves, Misdup is a perfect example of island life in Guna Yala. Bring biodegradable sunscreen and reapply often, as the Caribbean sun is strong even on cloudy days.
Isla Diablo and Guna culture
The final stop is Isla Diablo, a small island cared for by a Guna family, with more time to swim, sunbathe and take in the view before the boat returns to Carti. Here and on the other islands you may see Guna women wearing molas, the famous hand-sewn panels of layered coloured cloth with geometric and animal designs, along with beaded bands on their arms and legs; molas make beautiful, authentic souvenirs.
The Guna have kept their language, traditions and self-government for generations, and visitors are welcome as long as they respect local rules: ask before photographing people, keep the beaches clean and pay the community fee. The best time to visit San Blas is the dry season from December to April for sunshine, although winds can make the crossing bumpier; the rainy months often bring calmer water and short showers.

The price is per person, with a reduced rate for children aged 3 to 9. The booking panel on this page shows the current price.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
Children are welcome, but the day is long and the roads and boat rides are bumpy. The tour is not suitable for pregnant women, people with back problems or people with mobility impairments.

Your original passport, cash for the Guna Yala fee, swimwear, a towel, biodegradable sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a waterproof bag and your own snorkel mask if you have one.
What is the best time to visit San Blas?
The dry season from December to April brings sunny days, though trade winds can make the sea choppier. From May to November there are more showers, but the water is often calm and clear.
What happens in bad weather?
The order of islands or the time at each stop may change for safety. If the port authorities close the sea, we offer another date or a full refund.
Why does the tour start so early?
