Full Description
Sealine and the edge of the desert
About an hour's drive south of Doha, past the town of Mesaieed, the road ends where the sand begins at Sealine, a long beach backed by golden dunes. This is the gateway to the southern desert of Qatar and the meeting place for safari vehicles, where drivers lower their tyre pressure for driving on soft sand and travellers stretch their legs by the sea.
Here you enjoy your camel ride, a gentle walk on the back of a camel led by a handler, the traditional way of crossing the desert for centuries. It is a short, calm experience that children and adults both love, and a great moment for photos against the dunes. The guide explains how camels are bred and raced in Qatar and why they remain at the heart of local culture.
Dune bashing in southern Qatar
From Sealine the 4x4 heads into a sea of dunes that rolls south towards the Inland Sea. Your experienced driver takes the vehicle up steep crests, along sharp ridges and down sliding slopes in a thrilling ride known as dune bashing, while the sand sprays around the windows. Seat belts are fastened at all times, and the driver adjusts the intensity if anyone prefers a calmer ride.
Between runs, the driver stops on high points for views over an endless landscape of sand shaped by the wind, changing colour from pale gold to deep orange with the sun. Many travellers ask whether a desert safari in Doha is worth it; for most, this drive across the dunes is the highlight of their stay in Qatar, and a complete contrast to the modern skyline of the capital.
Sandboarding on the high dunes
At one of the tallest dunes the group stops for sandboarding. You climb to the top with a board, sit or stand on it, and slide down the soft slope as fast as you dare. Beginners usually start sitting or lying on the board, which is easy and safe, while the more adventurous try to ride standing up like on snow.
Climbing back up the dune in the sand is the hardest part, so take your time and drink water. Sandboarding is included in this tour and is a favourite activity for children and teenagers, who often want to go again and again. The soft sand makes falls harmless, but wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and shake out your shoes afterwards.
Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea
The highlight of the route is Khor Al Adaid, known as the Inland Sea, a tidal inlet that pushes deep into the desert in the south-east of Qatar, close to the border with Saudi Arabia. It is one of the few places in the world where the sea meets the desert in this way, with tall dunes rolling right down to calm turquoise water. The area is a protected nature reserve and a recognised site of natural value.
Your driver stops on the dunes above the water and then on the shore, where you can walk on the sand, dip your feet in the shallow sea and look across to the Saudi coast on the far side. Seabirds and migratory birds gather here, especially in winter. If you are wondering how to get to the Inland Sea in Qatar, the route requires a 4x4 and an experienced driver, which is why a guided tour is the easiest way.
From Doha to the desert: when to go
Our driver picks you up from your hotel in Doha, or from the cruise terminal for travellers arriving by ship, and the drive south along the highway takes about an hour. Along the way the guide tells you about Qatar's history, from pearl diving and Bedouin life to the modern city you leave behind, and points out the industrial city of Mesaieed before the sand begins.
The best time for a desert safari in Qatar is from October to April, when temperatures are pleasant and evenings cool. In the summer months the heat is intense, so the early morning departure is the most comfortable choice. Afternoon departures reach the Inland Sea around sunset, when the dunes glow in warm light. The full tour lasts about five hours from pickup to drop-off.
