Full Description
The Edge of the World and the Tuwaiq Escarpment
The Edge of the World, known locally as Jebel Fihrayn, is a section of the Tuwaiq Escarpment north-west of Riyadh where the plateau ends in a sheer cliff, with a drop of several hundred metres to the plain below. The view of the desert stretching to the horizon is unlike anything else near the capital.
It has become one of the most popular things to do near Riyadh, and it is at its best in the cooler months from autumn to spring. The escarpment is dramatic in every light, but the late afternoon is special, when the rock turns orange and the shadows lengthen across the plain.
Off-road driving and the desert sunset
Reaching the cliffs involves a drive from Riyadh and then a stretch of off-road track across rocky desert in a 4x4, which is an experience in itself. Your guide chooses a safe route and a good spot to watch the sun go down.
Time at the edge is spent walking along the rim, taking photographs and simply looking out. You may see camels grazing in the desert around the plateau, though this depends on the day. Stay behind the safe edge and follow your guide's advice, as there are no railings.
Stargazing and dinner in the desert
After sunset the desert turns very quiet and, with little light pollution, the sky fills with stars. Stargazing at the Edge of the World is a highlight for many guests, and your guide points out constellations and planets when conditions are clear.
The default shared option includes dinner as part of the evening, so you can eat while the stars come out before the drive back to Riyadh. Lunch is not included. Temperatures drop quickly after dark, so bring a warm layer even in mild months. Keep your phone charged for photographs, although the best views are the ones you simply enjoy.
