Overview

This full-day tour from Belgrade follows the Danube east to one of the most dramatic river landscapes in Europe. You visit Golubac Fortress, a medieval castle with ten towers guarding the entrance to the Iron Gates gorge, drive along the river through Đerdap National Park and take a one-hour boat ride between the cliffs of the gorge, where the Danube narrows to its tightest point. It is a shared small-group tour of up to 18 travellers in an air-conditioned van or minibus, with a professional English-speaking guide, pickup from central Belgrade and both the fortress entry and the boat ride included. This option runs from April to October; in winter, a version with Lepenski Vir replaces the boat ride.

Full Description

Golubac Fortress

Golubac Fortress rises from the rocks at the point where the Danube enters the Iron Gates gorge, its ten towers climbing the hillside in a stepped line of stone walls. First mentioned in the 14th century, it controlled river traffic for hundreds of years and changed hands many times between Serbs, Hungarians and Ottomans. After a long restoration it reopened in 2019, and it is now one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Serbia.

With your included ticket you walk through the courtyards, climb some of the towers on steep wooden stairs and look out over the wide river to the Romanian shore. The visitor centre explains the sieges and the life of the garrison. A Golubac Fortress tour is the perfect start to the day: allow about an hour and a half, and wear good shoes, as the steps inside the towers are narrow and steep.

Đerdap National Park and the Danube road

Đerdap National Park, created in 1974, is the largest national park in Serbia, stretching along the right bank of the Danube for about one hundred kilometres. The road from Golubac follows the river closely, cut into the cliffs and passing through short tunnels, with forests of oak, beech and lime trees above and the water below. The park shelters rare plants left from before the last ice age, as well as lynx, wolves and many birds of prey.

On the way east from Belgrade, the drive itself is a highlight: the Danube widens into broad, lake-like stretches, and small villages, orchards and fishing boats line the banks. This is the classic Danube day trip from Belgrade, and your guide shares stories about the river, the border with Romania and the communities that have lived here since prehistory. There is an optional stop for lunch at a local restaurant, paid on the spot.

Iron Gates gorge boat ride and the Kazan narrows

The Iron Gates are the longest river gorge in Europe, a series of canyons and valleys where the Danube cuts through the Carpathian and Balkan mountains on its way to the Black Sea. At the Kazan narrows the river squeezes to about 150 metres wide between limestone walls several hundred metres high, and the water reaches great depth. The view from a small boat on the river is far more impressive than from the road.

During the one-hour Iron Gates boat trip, the captain heads into the gorge to show you the cliffs, the caves and, depending on the route of the day, a Roman stone plaque from the 2nd century that marked the ancient road along the river, and a huge face carved into the rock on the Romanian side in modern times. The boat ride runs from April to October, which is also the best time to visit the Iron Gates.

Lepenski Vir, the winter alternative

In the winter season, from November to March, when the boats do not run, the tour visits Lepenski Vir instead. This archaeological site on the Danube is one of the most important prehistoric settlements in Europe, inhabited by hunters and fishermen from around 9,500 to 6,000 BC. They built houses with a unique trapezoid plan and carved round stone sculptures with faces that look half human and half fish.

When the dam downstream raised the level of the Danube, the remains were moved to higher ground and protected under a large glass roof, next to a modern museum. A visit to Lepenski Vir shows you how people lived on these banks long before the first cities. If you book in winter, choose the winter option in the booking panel; in summer the boat ride is the main experience of the day.
