Full Description

The Vallée de Mai nature reserve

The Vallée de Mai is a small valley of primeval palm forest in the granite heart of Praslin, protected since 1966 and inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1983. It is the only place, with nearby Curieuse, where the coco de mer palm grows wild, and all six palm species endemic to the Seychelles stand together here under a canopy of fan-shaped fronds several metres across. Early visitors called it the Garden of Eden, and the atmosphere inside still explains why: filtered green light, cool air and the creak and rustle of giant leaves.

A private Vallée de Mai tour with a guide turns a pleasant walk into a lesson in island evolution. In about an hour and a half you cover the main loop trails, stop where the best specimens stand and learn how the valley survived fires, logging and the collectors who once prized its nuts. The reserve is open daily; the entrance fee is paid at the gate and is not included.

The coco de mer and the black parrot

The coco de mer is the reason the valley is famous. Its nut, shaped like a double coconut, is the largest and heaviest seed of any plant, takes six or seven years to ripen, and grows on female palms that can reach twenty-five metres; the male palms carry long catkins, and the legends about the two are part of every guide's story. Your guide shows you mature nuts, young palms with leaves bigger than a person and the slow-growing seedlings on the forest floor, and explains why the species is protected and every nut counted.

Above the palms lives the Seychelles black parrot, a shy, dark bird found only on Praslin and the national bird of the country. The Vallée de Mai is its most important feeding ground, and with patience and a guide who knows its whistle you have a good chance of seeing one in the canopy, especially in the morning or the late afternoon. Blue pigeons, bulbuls, sunbirds, bright green geckos and tree frogs complete the picture.

The trails and the practical visit

The reserve has a network of short, shaded loop trails from the visitor centre, with wooden bridges over the stream, viewpoints and benches. The main circuit is comfortable at a slow pace, which is what this private walk is designed for: about one and a half hours with your guide, stopping often, with no group to keep up with. Paths are mostly flat with some gentle slopes and steps; the reserve is listed as wheelchair-accessible on the main paths, and our guide adapts the route to your party.

Fast-track entry through a separate entrance means you skip the queue at the main gate, which matters on days when ferries and cruise groups arrive together. Choose the 09:00 start for the coolest air and the most birdsong, 12:00 for a late-morning walk, or 14:00 if you prefer an afternoon. Opening hours are during the day, every day, and light rain is no reason to cancel; the forest is at its most beautiful when the leaves are wet.

Praslin and your transfer

The Vallée de Mai sits in the middle of Praslin on the road that crosses the island from Baie Ste Anne to Grand Anse, about fifteen minutes from most hotels. Our driver collects you at the reception of your hotel, villa or guest house anywhere on Praslin fifteen to thirty minutes before the start time and brings you back after the walk, so the whole experience takes about two and a half hours door to door. If you are staying on La Digue or Mahe, ask us about ferry timings; the ferry jetty at Baie Ste Anne is close by.

This walk is easy to combine with the rest of a Praslin day: Anse Lazio or Côte d'Or beach in the afternoon after a morning start, or a boat trip to Curieuse and St Pierre on another day. If you want the forest with a beach and the museum in one private day, see our longer Vallée de Mai and Anse Lazio tour.
