Full Description
Bojnice Castle
Bojnice Castle is the castle that most people imagine when they think of Slovakia: a cluster of pointed towers, steep roofs and battlements rising above a green park. Its origins go back to the 12th century, but its present fairy-tale look dates from a romantic reconstruction between 1889 and 1910, inspired by the castles of the Loire valley in France. Today it is a branch of the Slovak National Museum and one of the most visited sights in the country.
Your guide walks you around the castle grounds and explains its history, its legends and the natural travertine cave hidden beneath it. Entry to the interiors is not part of the listed inclusions and can be paid on site if time allows. The small spa town of Bojnice, with its thermal springs and the oldest zoo in Slovakia, lies right below. A Bojnice Castle day trip is the perfect opening of this tour.
Čičmany, the painted village
Čičmany is a small village in a valley of the Strážov mountains, famous for its wooden log houses decorated with white geometric patterns. The tradition began when villagers protected the wood with lime, and over time the marks became intricate symbols of crosses, stars, zigzags and animals, painted on dark timber. In 1977 the village became one of the first protected reserves of folk architecture in the world.
Walking along the main street feels like stepping into a picture book. Two of the houses are open as a small museum showing traditional rooms, costumes and embroidery, whose patterns match those on the walls. Your guide explains the meaning of the symbols and the life of mountain farmers here. Čičmany is quiet and authentic, and it is one of the most photographed villages in Slovakia.
Orava Castle
Orava Castle stands on a narrow limestone cliff more than a hundred metres above the Orava river, near the village of Oravský Podzámok. It was founded in the 13th century after the Mongol invasion to guard the trade route to Poland, and over the centuries it grew upwards in three levels, from the lower castle by the river to the upper castle on the very top of the rock, linked by steep stairways and gates.
Seen from the bridge or the riverbank, the castle looks as if it grows out of the cliff, one of the most dramatic sights in Central Europe. The guide shares its stories and legends, and you have free time for photos and a walk. Inside, the castle houses the museum of the Orava region; if you plan to visit the interiors, Orava Castle tickets are bought on site and the climb to the top is long.
The High Tatras
The High Tatras are the highest part of the Carpathian mountains and the smallest alpine range in Europe, with granite peaks rising above 2,600 metres along the border with Poland. Protected since 1949 as Slovakia's oldest national park, they offer glacial lakes, pine forests, waterfalls and mountain resorts. The tour ends the day here with a stop in the mountains, typically at a glacial lake such as Štrbské Pleso.
Štrbské Pleso lies at about 1,350 metres, surrounded by forest and peaks, and a flat path around the lake takes about 30 to 45 minutes, with views that change with the light. In winter the area is covered in snow and ski slopes, and in summer it is green and fresh. The best time to visit the High Tatras is from June to September for hiking weather, or December to March for snowy landscapes.
