Full Description
From Stockholm into the forest
The evening starts at a central meeting point in Stockholm, where your guide gives a short introduction to how the safari will unfold. You then drive in a comfortable minibus into the woods, leaving the city behind within a short time, which is one of the things people like most about this Stockholm wildlife tour.
Sweden is one of the most forested countries in Europe, and only a short distance from the capital there are large areas of pine and spruce forest with lakes and clearings. This is the natural habitat of the animals you will look for, and the drive is a good time to ask your guide about local nature and the Swedish outdoors.
The forest hike and viewpoint
On arrival you walk up a short, easy trail to a viewpoint over the forest. The walk is light and suitable for most people, and it lets you breathe the fresh air, stretch your legs and look for tracks and other signs of animals.
Your guide explains how to read those signs, such as hoofprints, droppings and rubbed bark, and what they say about which animals have passed. If you are wondering what to expect on a moose safari in Sweden, this gentle hike is the part where you learn to look and listen rather than to walk far.
The campfire meal
The centrepiece of the evening is a meal cooked over an open fire in the bushcraft style. Your guide lights the fire and prepares the food while you sit around it, and the group is served a hot meal. Depending on the season, the meal comes before or after the hike, timed to the sunset.
Around the fire the guide tells stories about the wildlife of Sweden and which animals you have the best chance of spotting that night. In the winter months, the meal is served inside a tipi tent to keep everyone warm, and the hike is a little longer.
Moose and other wildlife
The moose is the largest deer in the world, called an elk in Europe and älg in Swedish, and Sweden has a large population. You may also see roe deer, fallow deer, wild boar, hares and a range of birds. The group drives to several hotspots to cover more ground, and uses large torches if it gets dark.
Wildlife is wild and sightings are never guaranteed, but your guide follows the animals through the seasons to maximise your chances, and quality binoculars are provided. In winter, from November to March, moose are less active and harder to spot. Dusk is generally the best time of day to see them.
