Full Description
Gamla Stan and the Royal Palace
Gamla Stan, Stockholm's Old Town, grew from the settlement founded around 1252 on a small island where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic. Its narrow lanes, including Mårten Trotzigs gränd, barely 90 centimetres wide at its narrowest, open onto Stortorget, the oldest square in the city, where the Nobel Prize Museum stands in the former Stock Exchange.
At the island's edge rises the Royal Palace, a massive Baroque building finished in the 1750s with more than 600 rooms, where the changing of the guard draws crowds in the outer courtyard. Getting to Gamla Stan is easy with this ticket: the bus stops at the Royal Opera and Slussen, and the boat stops beside the palace.
Djurgården: Vasa Museum, Skansen and ABBA The Museum
Djurgården is the green museum island of Stockholm. The Vasa Museum displays the only almost fully preserved 17th-century warship in the world: the Vasa sank in 1628 just minutes into its first voyage, was raised in 1961 and is about 98 percent original. Many visitors say it is the one museum in Stockholm not to miss.
Nearby, Skansen, opened in 1891, was the world's first open-air museum, with historic farmhouses, craft workshops and Nordic animals such as elk and bears. ABBA The Museum and the Gröna Lund amusement park are also within a short walk. Vasa Museum tickets and other entry fees are not included, but both bus and boat stop right on the island.
Stockholm City Hall and Södermalm
Stockholm City Hall, completed in 1923 on the island of Kungsholmen, is famous for its 106-metre tower crowned with three golden crowns and for the Blue Hall, where the Nobel Prize banquet is held every December. The gilded Golden Hall above is covered with more than 18 million mosaic pieces. Guided tours inside need a separate ticket.
Across the water, the hilly island of Södermalm offers the best free viewpoints in Stockholm. Hop off for Monteliusvägen, a cliff-top path looking over City Hall and Riddarfjärden, or for the Fotografiska photography museum on the waterfront. Is Södermalm worth visiting? For views, cafés and a more local feel, it is one of the city's highlights.
The Hop-On Hop-Off Boat Route
Stockholm is built on 14 islands, so seeing it from the water makes perfect sense. On the options that include the boat, sightseeing boats connect stops such as the Royal Palace, Nybroplan, the Vasa Museum, Skeppsholmen, Gröna Lund, the ferry terminal, Fotografiska and Slussen, with audio commentary as you sail.
The boats run about every hour from 10:00 to 17:00 in the sailing season, but they do not operate in winter, when the waterways freeze. The best time to use a Stockholm hop-on hop-off boat is from late spring to early autumn; in winter, the bus-only options are the better choice. Buses run all year about every 30 minutes.
