Full Description
Waipio Valley Lookout on the Hamakua Coast
The day starts with the Waipio Valley Lookout, where the road runs out at the edge of a huge green amphitheatre. Cliffs rise up to about 600 metres on either side, waterfalls thread down the walls, and a black-sand beach meets the Pacific at the valley mouth. Waipio is known as the Valley of the Kings, because Hawaiian chiefs once lived and farmed taro here.
Many people search for a Waipio Valley tour and wonder whether the lookout is worth the drive. It is: the view is among the finest on the island, and the steep road down to the valley floor is limited, so the lookout is how most visitors see it. We stop for about 20 minutes, and your guide explains the valley's history while you take photos.
Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls near Hilo
Akaka Falls State Park is a short loop path through dense rainforest, with orchids, ferns and bamboo along the way. The main waterfall drops about 135 metres in a single plunge into a gorge, which makes it one of the tallest falls you can reach on foot in Hawaii. Our Akaka Falls tour stop lasts about 30 minutes, enough for the full loop at an easy pace.
Rainbow Falls sits just outside Hilo, where the Wailuku River pours over a lava cave. Its Hawaiian name, Waianuenue, refers to a rainbow seen in water, and the morning light often does exactly that in the mist. After rain both falls run fuller, so the best time to visit is after a wet spell. Paths can be slippery, so wear closed-toe shoes.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the highlight of the day and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You spend about an hour and a half with your guide at the Kilauea summit area: steam vents rising from the ground, the lookouts over Halema'uma'u and Kilauea Iki craters, and a short walk on the crater rim trail. Halema'uma'u is the crater Hawaiians associate with Pele, the goddess of fire.
People often ask whether the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park tour from Kona is worth the long drive. It is, because the scenery is unlike anywhere else, from bare black lava fields to rainforest. What you can see changes with volcanic activity and which areas are open on the day, so we cannot promise flowing lava; the guide checks current conditions and chooses the best viewpoints.
Punalu'u Black Sand Beach
Punalu'u Black Sand Beach lies on the southern coast, and its sand is made of tiny basalt grains formed when hot lava meets the sea and shatters. Green sea turtles, called honu, often rest on the shore here, and the beach is one of the best places on the island to see them from a respectful distance. Stay about three metres away, as they are protected.
This is also the lunch and photo stop, with around 50 minutes of free time. The sea here can be rough, with strong currents, so most travellers walk the shore rather than swim, and your guide will give advice on the day. An optional short stop at the nearby bakery is a chance to try local sweet bread before the long drive back.
A Kona Coffee Farm
The day finishes at a Kona coffee farm on the green slopes above the coast. Kona coffee grows in a narrow belt on the flanks of Hualalai and Mauna Loa, where volcanic soil, morning sun and afternoon cloud suit the trees. You walk through the orchards with your guide, learn how the cherries are picked by hand and milled, and sip a warm cup grown on the farm.
This is a relaxed 40-minute stop and a good way to end the Big Island day trip. If you have been searching for the best Kona coffee farm tour, this visit gives you a real look at how the island's famous crop is grown and processed. On the way, the drive passes South Point and views of Kealakekua Bay around sunset.
How the Big Island Day Trip Works
The Big Island is larger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined, so a Big Island volcano tour from Kona means a long day in the vehicle. The loop crosses several climate zones, from dry lava coast to cool rainforest, which is why the scenery changes so often. The day takes about 11 hours in total, with short walks at each stop and longer time at the park and the beach.
Many visitors ask how to see the waterfalls and the volcano in one day without driving themselves. This tour solves that: the guide handles the roads, parking and timing, and the small group keeps stops quick and friendly. The day runs rain or shine, and the order of stops can change because of closures or conditions.
