Full Description

Whitney Plantation: the museum of slavery in Louisiana

Whitney Plantation, in Wallace on the River Road, opened to the public in 2014 as a museum dedicated to the history of slavery in Louisiana. Unlike many plantation visits, it tells the story from the point of view of the enslaved people who lived and worked here. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Your Whitney Plantation tour uses an audio guide, so you move at your own pace through exhibits, restored buildings and memorial spaces. The narration draws on hundreds of first-person accounts, and many visitors find it one of the most moving and educational things to do near New Orleans. Allow about two hours for the visit.

The memorials, the buildings and the Big House

The grounds include several memorials, among them a wall engraved with the names of enslaved people and a field of sculptures of children who died in bondage in the parish. A church, a kitchen, a blacksmith's workshop, cabins and other outbuildings show how a working sugar plantation was organised, and how the estate moved from indigo to sugar in the early 1800s.

The Big House is a fine example of a raised Creole cottage in Spanish Creole style, and it is one of the earliest of its kind in Louisiana. You see the rooms and hear how the owners lived alongside the labour of the people they enslaved. The paths are gravel and uneven, so wear comfortable shoes and take your time.

The Manchac Swamp pontoon boat tour

After Whitney, the main option continues to the Manchac Swamp for a 90-minute cruise on a covered pontoon boat, driven by a local captain. The covered deck gives shade and shelter, which is welcome in the heat of a Louisiana afternoon. The boat glides through cypress and tupelo trees draped in Spanish moss.

Your captain talks about the history of the old fishing community of Frenier and Cajun life among the bayous, and points out alligators, herons, egrets and turtles. The mood is deliberately calm after the intensity of the museum, so the day feels balanced. Beverages and snacks can be bought at the swamp, though food and drinks are not included in the price.

Planning your day: transport, timing and options

With the main option, you meet at a point in New Orleans and return transport is included; departures at 9:00 AM or 11:00 AM are shown in the booking panel. The whole day lasts about seven and three-quarter hours. The Whitney-only option includes return transport and the plantation audio tour but not the swamp cruise, so it is shorter.

Download the audio tour app to your phone before you arrive and bring headphones if you like. Wear comfortable shoes and a hat, and bring sun protection. The tour includes difficult subject matter, and parents should decide what suits their children. Depending on the option you choose, check the booking panel for the date and what is included.
