Full Description
The Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France, dedicated in 1886. Sculpted by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with an iron frame by Gustave Eiffel, it stands about 305 feet from the ground to the tip of the torch. Searching for Statue of Liberty tickets from New York usually leads to the ferry, the only way to reach Liberty Island, and this page covers the standard ticket.
On the island, you collect an audio guide and walk around the base at your own pace, with views over New York Harbor and the Manhattan skyline. This ticket does not include the pedestal or the crown, so it is a ground-level visit. The Statue of Liberty Museum shows the original torch and tells the story of the monument.
Ellis Island and the Immigration Museum
Ellis Island was the main immigration station of the United States from 1892 to 1954, and more than twelve million people passed through it. The National Immigration Museum, in the historic main building, tells their stories through photographs, objects and recordings, and the vaulted Registry Room is a highlight.
Take the audio guide, read the personal accounts and see the rooms where new arrivals were examined and questioned. Genealogical research is not included in this ticket, but many visitors enjoy imagining the journeys of their own ancestors.
The ferry, departure points and security
Your default option leaves from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan, near Castle Clinton. The other option leaves from Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey, which can be easier if you are staying on that side. How to get to the Statue of Liberty ferry: take the subway to South Ferry or Bowling Green, or the Hudson-Bergen light rail in New Jersey.
Everyone passes through airport-style security before boarding, so allow time at the screening facility. Only buy through official channels and ignore unofficial vendors who approach you in Battery Park.
Planning your day
Allow between four and six hours to see both islands, and choose an earlier departure, ideally before 1 pm, so you have time for Ellis Island. Later departures may not leave enough time for both islands. The best time to visit is a weekday morning outside the peak summer weeks.
Bring a passport or photo ID, comfortable shoes, water and weather-appropriate clothing. Large bags, glass items and drones are not allowed. Queues can be long at busy times, and audio guides are included on each island.
