Full Description
Old Town San Diego in the evening
The tour starts at a stop in Old Town, the historic heart of San Diego, where the first Spanish and Mexican settlement grew up in the 1700s and 1800s. In the evening the streets around the old plazas are quieter, and the guide sets the scene with stories about the early days of the city before the trolley sets off.
If you arrive early, walk around the plaza and the shops of Old Town, which stay lively in the evening. The meeting stop is shown on your voucher, so check it before you go.
The Gaslamp Quarter and downtown at night
After Old Town the trolley heads into downtown, where the Gaslamp Quarter is the highlight after dark. This district of restored Victorian buildings is named after the gas lamps that once lit its streets, and today it glows with lights, signs and restaurant terraces. The trolley also passes Petco Park and the tall buildings of the business district.
Seeing downtown at night is very different from a daytime tour, because the buildings are lit and the streets are full of people. It is a good way to choose where to come back on foot for dinner.
The Embarcadero and the waterfront
The waterfront route follows the Embarcadero past the harbor, where the tall ships of the Maritime Museum and the aircraft carrier museum stand along the shore. At night their outlines reflect on the water, and the guide explains why the navy has been central to San Diego for more than a century.
This part of the tour is best in the early evening light, which can be very pretty in summer. In winter it is already dark by the time you reach the harbor, so the city lights take over.
Coronado Ferry Landing and the skyline view
The 20-minute photo stop at Coronado Ferry Landing is the highlight of the tour. From the landing you look back across the bay to the San Diego skyline, one of the best night views in the city, with the lights reflected in the water. Have your camera or phone ready.
There is a small waterfront area with shops at the landing, but you will not have time for a long visit. If you want to see more of Coronado, combine the night tour with a day trip to Coronado and the Hotel del Coronado on another day.
