With a live narrating driver-guide, the trolley loops through the historic centre, stopping near the old Spanish stone fort, the colonial quarter on St. George Street, the cathedral and Plaza de la Constitución, the Bridge of Lions and the bayfront, and the historic old jail. Full Description

St. Augustine History Museum

Your ticket includes entry to the St. Augustine History Museum, next to the trolley welcome centre on San Marco Avenue, and it is the perfect place to begin. The museum tells the story of the city across more than four centuries, from the first Timucua people and the Spanish settlers to the British period, the Florida railway boom and the arrival of winter visitors in the late 19th century.

Displays include artefacts recovered from Spanish shipwrecks, colonial weapons and armour, models of the early town and objects from daily life in different eras. Plan about 45 minutes for the visit, ideally before you board the trolley, so that the driver-guide's stories make even more sense as you ride. It is one of the best ways to understand why St. Augustine played such a large role in American history.

Castillo de San Marcos, the Spanish stone fort

Castillo de San Marcos is the city's most famous landmark and the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. The Spanish built it between 1672 and 1695 from coquina, a local stone made of compressed shells, which absorbed cannonballs instead of shattering. In more than three centuries of history, the fort was never taken by force, changing hands only through treaties.

The star-shaped fort overlooks Matanzas Bay, with thick walls, a dry moat, bastions and a broad grass glacis where families picnic. The trolley stops nearby, so you can walk along the walls or visit the interior, where rangers often fire historic cannons on weekends (entry to the fort is paid separately). A Castillo de San Marcos tour takes about an hour and is a highlight for children.

St. George Street and the colonial quarter

Across the road from the fort, the old city gate opens onto St. George Street, a pedestrian lane that runs through the heart of the Spanish colonial town. Balconies, courtyards, coquina walls and wooden houses line the way, among them one of the oldest wooden schoolhouses in the country, now a small museum. Cafés, ice-cream shops and craft stores fill the side lanes.

The Colonial Quarter brings 18th-century life back with blacksmiths, musket demonstrations and costumed interpreters. Hop off the trolley here and take your time, as St. George Street is best enjoyed slowly, especially in the morning before day-trippers arrive. Many visitors stop for lunch here, then rejoin the trolley at the next stop towards the plaza and the bayfront.

Plaza de la Constitución and the Cathedral Basilica

At the southern end of St. George Street lies Plaza de la Constitución, laid out in 1573 according to Spanish town-planning laws and one of the oldest public squares in the country. Its white obelisk celebrates the Spanish Constitution of 1812, and the old market, oak trees and benches make it the living room of the city, especially during festivals and the winter light season.

On the north side of the plaza stands the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, completed in 1797, with a graceful bell tower and an interior decorated with murals. Government House, a historic seat of colonial administration, stands nearby. The trolley stops a short walk from the plaza, making it an easy place to hop off, rest in the shade and watch daily life before continuing your loop.

Bridge of Lions, the bayfront and the old jail

The Bridge of Lions, opened in 1927, is a graceful drawbridge across Matanzas Bay to Anastasia Island, guarded at its western end by two marble lions. From the bayfront promenade you watch sailboats and fishing boats, and on clear days you can see the black-and-white St. Augustine Lighthouse on the island. Sunset over the bay is one of the most beautiful moments of a day in St. Augustine.

Near the trolley base, the Old Jail, built in 1891, looks more like a red-brick mansion than a prison; the sheriff and his family lived inside alongside the inmates. Is a St. Augustine trolley tour worth it? For a first visit, the narrated loop and unlimited stops are the most comfortable way to see all these sights in one day.
