Prizren, the Ottoman gem of Kosovo

Prizren lies at the foot of the Sharr Mountains along the Lumbardhi River, and it is the best-preserved historic town in Kosovo. Its old town is a mix of Ottoman mosques, Orthodox churches, stone houses and lively squares, and it is regularly voted Kosovo's most beautiful city. A Prizren day trip from Tirana takes around three and a half hours each way, including a coffee stop.

Your guide leads the two-hour walking tour through the old town, across the Old Stone Bridge over the Lumbardhi River and around Shadervan Square, the heart of the town, where cafes surround an Ottoman fountain. Lunch is taken in the old quarter in free time, and the tour finishes with time to browse the bazaar and its traditional crafts.

Sinan Pasha Mosque and the old bazaar

The Sinan Pasha Mosque was completed in 1615 and is the most important Ottoman building in Prizren, with a large dome and a courtyard shaded by trees. It stands by the river at the edge of Shadervan Square, and its stone minaret and interior calligraphy show classic Ottoman design.

Behind it the old bazaar sells filigree jewellery, handmade textiles, leather and sweets, and it is a good place to pick up a souvenir. Dress modestly for the mosque, and remember that visiting hours can change around prayer times. Ask your guide about the local cuisine and the history of the town's multi-ethnic communities.

Pristina, the capital of Kosovo

Pristina is a compact, lively capital where Ottoman, socialist and modern buildings stand side by side. It became the capital of the independent Republic of Kosovo in 2008, and the tour of Pristina starts at the Newborn Monument, the large yellow typographic sculpture unveiled on the day of independence, which is repainted each year with a new design.

Nearby you walk down the pedestrian Mother Teresa Boulevard to Mother Teresa Square, admire the striking National Library with its metal-mesh domes and see the Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa, which is open to visitors. The day gives you a good first impression of the city, though it is a short visit of about an hour and a half.

The tour leaves Tirana or Durres at about 7:00 and lasts about thirteen hours, with a comfortable drive north and a border crossing where your passport or ID card is checked. Please check the entry requirements for your nationality before you book, as some travellers may need a visa. Border waiting times can vary by day and season.
