Full Description

The Daintree Rainforest

The Daintree Rainforest is part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area and is widely described as the oldest surviving tropical rainforest on Earth, with a history stretching back well over a hundred million years. It shelters an extraordinary share of Australia's plant, bird and butterfly species, including the flightless cassowary.

A Daintree day tour from Cairns lets you experience this without planning anything: the drive north along the coast takes around two and a half hours each way, and your guide explains the plants, animals and Aboriginal heritage as you go.

The Daintree River cruise

A one-hour guided cruise on the Daintree River is the best way to see wildlife from the water. Estuarine crocodiles rest on the mudbanks and can be spotted from youngsters up to large adults of several metres, and the mangrove edges hold kingfishers, herons and other birds.

The boat stays at a safe distance, and the guide explains how the river, tides and mangroves work together. Crocodile spotting is never guaranteed, but the Daintree is one of the most reliable places in Australia to see one. Bring a camera with a zoom lens if you have one.

Rainforest boardwalk, swim and lunch

On a guided boardwalk you walk beneath giant palms, buttress-rooted trees and vines, learning how the forest works and looking out for birds and reptiles. Some trees along the way are centuries old, and the guide points out bush foods and medicines used for thousands of years.

After the walk you stop for lunch with the group, then take a refreshing swim in a freshwater pool set in the forest, a highlight of the day for many guests. Bring swimwear and a towel, as the clear water is a welcome relief on a hot tropical day.

Cape Tribulation and the Daintree cable ferry

Cape Tribulation is where the rainforest reaches down to a long white beach and the Great Barrier Reef lies just offshore. Captain Cook named it in 1770 after his ship struck the reef nearby. You have time for a walk on the sand and a short boardwalk to a lookout.

To reach it, the 4WD crosses the Daintree River on a small cable ferry, which is included in the price along with national park fees. The tour is long, with pickup around 06:45 and a total of up to twelve hours depending on your pickup area.
