Full Description

Grampians National Park (Gariwerd)

Grampians National Park, known to its Traditional Owners as Gariwerd, is one of Victoria's most spectacular natural areas. Sandstone ranges rise abruptly from farmland, with rugged peaks, deep valleys, waterfalls and more than 900 native plant species, including a great show of wildflowers in spring.

The park lies roughly 260 kilometres west of Melbourne, a drive of about three hours, so a Grampians day trip from Melbourne works best with a guide who handles the road and the timing for you. This small-group tour is designed to see the highlights in one long day.

Eureka Stockade Memorial Park

The day starts at Eureka Stockade Memorial Park in Ballarat, where you stop for morning tea and hear the story of the Eureka Rebellion of 1854. Miners fighting against unfair licence fees clashed with authorities in an event often described as a turning point in Australian democracy.

The park marks the site of the stockade and tells the story of the Eureka Flag through interpretive displays. It is also a comfortable break before the second part of the drive into the mountains, and it adds historical depth to the natural scenery that follows later in the day.

Silverband Falls and the Grand Canyon

Silverband Falls is a gentle waterfall in a quiet gully, reached by a walk of around half an hour through native bush. The trail is easy but can be slippery, so wear sturdy shoes and take care near the water.

The Grampians Grand Canyon is a dramatic corridor of weathered sandstone with narrow pathways, steps and overhanging cliffs, walked over about 30 minutes. Both stops are highlights for photography, and your guide explains the geology and plants along the way. Some paths involve stairs, so you should be comfortable with moderate walking.

Reeds Lookout, Boroka Lookout and Halls Gap kangaroos

Reeds Lookout gives a quick climb to views over the ranges, while Boroka Lookout offers a wide panorama across Halls Gap, the valley and distant plains. These stops are short but rewarding, and the light in the afternoon can be beautiful.

Around Halls Gap you have a good chance of seeing wild kangaroos grazing in the late afternoon, and a lunch stop lets you buy food in town. Lunch is not included, so bring your own or buy it in Halls Gap. The tour returns to Melbourne in the evening.
