Full Description

The Sydney Opera House on Bennelong Point

The Sydney Opera House sits on Bennelong Point at the edge of Sydney Harbour, and its white sail-like shells are the most recognised image of Australia. It opened in 1973 after a long, troubled construction, and in 2007 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also one of the busiest performing arts centres in the world, hosting thousands of events a year.

A Sydney Opera House guided tour is the best way to understand the building, because a guide explains what you are looking at and gives access to spaces that ticket holders for a performance do not see. The tour runs for about an hour and includes about 300 stairs and roughly two and a half kilometres of walking.

Jorn Utzon and the story of the design

The Danish architect Jorn Utzon won the international competition for the Opera House in 1957 with a sketch of sail-like forms rising from a platform. Building the shells proved extremely hard, and Utzon left the project in 1966 before it was finished, never to see the completed building. The roof was eventually covered in more than a million tiles, made in Sweden to give the shells their soft, shimmering surface.

Your guide tells this story with clarity and humour, and explains how Utzon's ideas about light, geometry and the harbour shaped the halls. Later reconciliation with the architect led to interior work that returned to his vision, and he was recognised for the building before his death in 2008.

Theatres, foyers and behind-the-scenes

Inside, the Opera House has several performance spaces, among them the Concert Hall with its huge organ, the Joan Sutherland Theatre and the Drama Theatre. Which halls you enter depends on rehearsals and events that day, so the route is set by availability. Even the foyers reward a visit, with tall glass walls facing the harbour and views across Circular Quay to the Harbour Bridge.

You may see a rehearsal or hear about the work of the crew who build sets and manage the lights, and your guide will point out some of the best photo positions. Video recording is not permitted during the tour, but photographs are welcome where your guide indicates.

Visiting the Opera House and what is nearby

To reach the Opera House, walk from Circular Quay station or ferry wharf along the harbour promenade; it takes about ten minutes. Meet at the Opera House itself, following the check-in details on your booking confirmation. Tours do not run on Christmas Day, on New Year's Eve, or before eleven on New Year's Day, and the route can change on show days.

After your tour, walk through the Royal Botanic Garden to Mrs Macquarie's Chair for classic views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge together. If you are checking whether the Sydney Opera House is worth visiting, this guided hour is the way to see its inner world rather than only its exterior.
