Overview
Swap the city for the lakes on a 5.5-hour tour from Salzburg to Hallstatt, the famous village on the Hallstätter See. You travel through the Salzkammergut with an English-speaking guide who introduces the region's salt history, then enjoy about 2.5 hours in Hallstatt for a lakeside walk, the market square, the Mühlbach waterfall and, if you wish, the Bone House or the Skywalk on your own. The return route runs via Abtenau and Gosau below the Dachstein. It suits travellers with limited time who want Hallstatt without a full-day trip.

Full Description
Hallstatt Village and Its Lakeside Walk
Hallstatt's pastel houses are stacked so tightly between mountain and water that for centuries the only way in was by boat or on a narrow footpath; the road tunnel above the village was only completed in the 1960s. Walking from the car park along the shore, you pass wooden boathouses, the Protestant church whose white spire appears in almost every photo, and the market square with its fountain.
Many people ask how to get from Salzburg to Hallstatt without changing trains and buses, and a guided half-day tour is the simplest answer. Once there, walk slowly: the famous postcard viewpoint is at the northern end of the village, and the Mühlbach stream tumbles through the centre as a small waterfall between the houses.
The Hallstatt Bone House and the Catholic Church
Above the lake, in the small St Michael's Chapel beside the Catholic parish church, lies the Hallstatt Bone House. Because the tiny graveyard had no room to expand, bones were exhumed after some years and many skulls were painted with names, dates and garlands of ivy or roses; around 600 painted skulls are displayed today, a custom that continued into the 20th century.
The Bone House has seasonal opening hours and its small entry fee is not included, but it is a short climb from the market square and fits easily into your free time. The terrace of the parish church also gives one of the best views over the rooftops and the lake, especially in the morning light.
The Skywalk and the Salzberg Above Hallstatt
High above the village, the Skywalk platform juts out from the Salzberg, the mountain where salt has been mined for thousands of years. It is reached by funicular from the southern end of the village and gives a bird's-eye view of the whole lake.
The Skywalk is not included on this tour, but you can visit it on your own if you allow about one hour of your 2.5 hours; check the funicular's seasonal timetable on the day. There is not enough time to join a salt mine tour, which takes longer, so if the mine is a priority, a full-day trip suits you better. Is Hallstatt worth visiting on a half-day tour? If you mainly want the village and the lake, the timing works well.
Gosau, Abtenau and the Dachstein Range
On the way back the coach takes a different road, climbing via Gosau and Russbach to Abtenau. Gosau lies at the foot of the jagged Gosaukamm ridge, and on clear days you see the glacier-topped Dachstein massif, at almost 3,000 metres the highest mountain of the region.
This scenic return turns the tour into a proper loop through the Salzkammergut and the Tennengau, with farmhouses, meadows and forested valleys. The best time to visit Hallstatt and the Dachstein area is from late spring to early autumn, when the roads are clear and the meadows green, although the snowy winter landscape has its own quiet charm.
