Full Description

Mirabell Palace, a Prince-Archbishop's Palace

Mirabell Palace was built in 1606 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for Salome Alt, the woman he loved, and was first called Altenau. His successor renamed it Mirabell, and in the 1720s the great Baroque architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt rebuilt it. A fire in 1818 destroyed much of the palace, but the Marble Hall and the grand Angel Staircase with its playful marble cherubs survived.

Today the palace houses the mayor's office and city departments, and it stands on the right bank of the Salzach, a few minutes' walk from the old town over the Makartsteg bridge. How to get to Mirabell Palace: from the main station it is about 15 minutes on foot, and many city buses stop at Mirabellplatz.

The Marble Hall, Salzburg's Most Elegant Concert Room

The Marble Hall was once the banquet room of the prince-archbishops, decorated with red and white marble, gilded stucco and tall windows onto the gardens. Leopold Mozart brought his children Wolfgang and Nannerl to perform here for the court, and today it is also one of the most sought-after places in Austria for civil weddings.

Its size is what makes a Mozart concert in Salzburg here so special: the hall seats only a few hundred people, so even from the back rows you hear every note of the violins and piano without amplification. Doors open 30 minutes before the concert; use that time to climb the Angel Staircase and admire the hall before the music starts.

The Concert: Chamber Music by Mozart and Other Masters

The concerts feature changing soloists and chamber ensembles, typically a string group or piano trio, playing works by Mozart alongside composers such as Haydn, Beethoven or Schubert. The programme depends on the date and the performers, and it is designed for both first-time listeners and experienced concert-goers.

A concert lasts about 1.5 hours with a 15-minute intermission, when refreshments can be bought in the foyer. Is the Mirabell Palace concert worth it? For an authentic, relaxed classical experience in a historic room, rather than a formal night at a large opera house, it is one of the best choices in the city, and morning performances fit easily into a sightseeing day.

The Mirabell Gardens

Before or after the concert, walk through the Mirabell Gardens, laid out around 1690 to plans by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. The formal parterres, the Pegasus fountain, the rose garden, the hedge theatre and the Dwarf Garden with its marble figures form a perfect frame for the fortress of Hohensalzburg rising above the old town.

The gardens are free to enter and open all year, and film fans will recognise the steps and fountain where Maria and the children sang Do-Re-Mi. The best time to visit the Mirabell Gardens is spring or early summer when the flower beds are in bloom, or on a summer evening before a 7 pm concert, when the light turns golden over the fortress.
