Full Description
The Leopold Museum in the MuseumsQuartier
The Leopold Museum opened in 2001 in the MuseumsQuartier, one of the largest cultural districts in the world, in a striking white limestone cube designed by the architects Ortner and Ortner. It is built around the collection of the ophthalmologist Rudolf Leopold, who spent decades gathering Austrian art from around 1900.
Its position between the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Hofburg makes it easy to combine with a day of museums. It is also one of the answers to the question of where to see Klimt and Schiele in Vienna, besides the Belvedere.
Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt
The museum holds more than forty paintings by Egon Schiele, the largest collection anywhere, including portraits and self-portraits with an intense, raw line that made him a founder of Expressionism. Works such as the portrait of Wally Neuzil and his townscapes show how radical he was.
Gustav Klimt is represented by Death and Life and important landscapes and sketches, which show the shift from the Secession's decorative style to a more emotional language. Seeing the two artists side by side helps you understand the artistic world of Vienna in 1900.
Vienna 1900: Secession, Wiener Werkstätte and Expressionism
Beyond the paintings, the museum presents the whole culture of the time: furniture and design by Otto Wagner, Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, Wiener Werkstätte objects, and paintings by Oskar Kokoschka and Richard Gerstl.
The collection follows how Vienna moved from Art Nouveau to Expressionism, with the city's writers, composers and thinkers as the background. The museum also has changing special exhibitions, which are included in your ticket. The Secession and Wiener Werkstätte rooms are also good preparation for a visit to the Secession building and the Belvedere, where Klimt's famous Kiss hangs.
