Full Description
Mozarthaus Vienna at Domgasse 5
The Mozarthaus stands on Domgasse, a quiet lane just behind St. Stephen's Cathedral. Mozart rented the first-floor apartment here from 1784 to 1787, the most productive and successful period of his years in Vienna, and it is the only one of his Vienna homes that survives today. The building is also called the Figarohaus because he composed The Marriage of Figaro here in 1786.
For many visitors this is the answer to the question of where Mozart lived in Vienna. Standing in the rooms where he composed, played and taught helps to place the music in the daily life of the composer and his family.
The exhibition and the audio guide
The exhibition spreads over three levels, telling the story of Mozart's life in Vienna, the society of his time and his most important works. A special exhibition changes each year and is included in the ticket.
An audio guide is included in your ticket, with a commentary for adults and a children's version, so you can explore at your own pace. Allow around 60 to 90 minutes for a relaxed visit, and check the language for your option on the booking panel. The ticket is valid for a single day, so you can time your visit for a quieter part of the day and enjoy the exhibition and the audio commentary without crowds.
The Haus der Musik combination ticket
Depending on the option you choose, you can add the Haus der Musik, a modern, interactive sound museum on Seilerstätte a few minutes' walk away. Its four floors let you experiment with sound, compose a waltz, conduct a virtual orchestra and see how the Vienna Philharmonic and great composers shaped the city's musical life.
The combined ticket is best for families and anyone who wants to spend a full morning or afternoon on music. If you only want the Mozart apartment, choose the museum ticket on its own. The Haus der Musik also has a floor on the history of the Vienna Philharmonic and a sound-experiment area that children especially enjoy, so the combined ticket suits families.
Practical visit: how to get to the Mozarthaus
To get to the Mozarthaus, take the U1 or U3 to Stephansplatz and walk about three minutes to Domgasse. Bring student ID or photo ID if you book a category with reduced admission.
Opening hours change by season, so check your date on the booking panel. Photography inside the exhibition and video recording are not allowed, and a cloakroom is available for coats and bags. The Mozarthaus is within a short walk of the cathedral, the Graben and the Hofburg, so it fits nicely into a day in the historic centre. Many visitors also stop for coffee in nearby lanes after the audio guide ends.
