Full Description

The Danube Canal and Schwedenplatz

The Danube Canal is a former side arm of the Danube, straightened and regulated in the 19th century, that curves for about 17 kilometres past the old city and separates it from the Leopoldstadt district. Its banks have become one of Vienna's liveliest promenades, with cycle paths, colourful street art on the walls and summer lounges on the water.

Most Danube Canal cruises start at the city boat station at Schwedenplatz, where the canal meets the edge of the first district. How to get to Schwedenplatz: the U1 and U4 underground lines and several trams stop right above the landing, and St Stephen's Cathedral is about ten minutes away on foot, so the cruise fits easily between other sights.

Urania, the Uniqa Tower and the Ringturm

Close to the start you pass the Urania, a domed public observatory and education centre built in 1910 by the architect Max Fabiani at the point where the Wien river flows into the canal. Opposite rises the Uniqa Tower, a 75-metre glass tower whose façade becomes a giant light display at night, and nearby floats the Badeschiff, a swimming pool on a moored ship.

Further along stands the Ringturm, a 1950s office tower crowned by a weather beacon whose coloured lights forecast the weather for the Viennese. This Vienna boat tour shows how the city mixes imperial and modern architecture along the water, and the screens on board explain each building as you pass.

Rossauer Kaserne and Spittelau

Upstream the boat passes the Rossauer Kaserne, a huge red-brick barracks with towers built after the 1848 revolution to guard the city, still used by government offices today. Beyond it, at Spittelau, you see the residential blocks designed by Zaha Hadid, which hover on stilts above the historic railway arches.

Next to them stands the colourful Spittelau heating plant, redesigned by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser with a golden ball on its chimney, one of the most unusual industrial buildings in Europe. Is the Danube Canal cruise worth it? If you want an easy, seated overview of districts most visitors never walk to, it is a pleasant 75 minutes, especially on a sunny afternoon.
