Full Description
The Seven Rila Lakes in Rila National Park
The Seven Rila Lakes are a group of glacial lakes lying in cirques between about 2,100 and 2,500 metres, each with its own name and character: the Tear, the Eye, the Kidney, the Twin, the Trefoil, the Fish and the Lower Lake. They sit inside Rila National Park in the highest mountain range in the Balkans, and the water is clear and cold. Photographers love the Eye, whose round shape is best seen from the ridge above.
How many lakes you see depends on your route, pace and the weather. Whether you are looking for Seven Rila Lakes tours from Sofia or a day trip you can adapt, the transport-only format lets you decide. Nights can be cold even in summer, and snow can linger on the paths into June.
The chairlift and hiking routes
The trip drives to the Panichishte area, where a chairlift climbs towards the Rila Lakes hut and saves a long uphill walk. Hiking is still involved after the lift, and if the lift is not running a longer walk is needed to reach the lakes. The chairlift ticket is not included and is paid locally in cash, so keep some cash with you.
A typical hike loops past several of the lakes on a mix of stone paths and grass, and many walkers reach the upper viewpoints for the classic picture. Routes vary from easy to demanding, so choose one that fits your fitness and the time you have. This is a moderate to demanding hike on mountain terrain, with rescue insurance recommended.
Rila Monastery on the way back
After the hike, the shared transfer continues to Rila Monastery, about an hour and three quarters away in the valley of the Rilska River. You have around an hour and a quarter to look around this large Orthodox monastery, which was founded in the tenth century and is listed by UNESCO. The frescoed church, the arcaded courtyards and the tower are the main sights.
The museum visit is optional and paid locally. Dress properly: shoulders must be covered and shorts and skirts must reach the knee. Since the visit is unguided, a little reading beforehand or the monastery information signs make the stop more meaningful, and the mekitsi sold nearby are a popular snack.
How the day works and the best time to go
The trip leaves central Sofia at 07:00 and returns in the evening, about thirteen hours later. You receive a briefing from your host about routes and safety at the start, but no guide walks with you. This makes it a good Rila Lakes day trip from Sofia for independent travellers who want structure without a group tour.
The best time to visit the Seven Rila Lakes is generally from July to September, when paths are clear of snow, though the weather can change quickly at any time. Bring rain gear, warm layers and plenty of water, since the trip operates in all weather.
