Full Description
Table Rock Centre: the brink of the Horseshoe Falls
The entrance to Journey Behind the Falls is inside the Table Rock Centre at 6650 Niagara Parkway, the visitor building that stands right at the edge of the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side. Table Rock takes its name from a flat ledge of rock that once jutted out over the gorge here and collapsed in the nineteenth century; today the terrace outside the building is the closest you can stand to the brink of the falls anywhere on either side of the river, with the water sliding over the crest a few metres away.
Exchange your voucher for a ticket at the Journey Behind the Falls counter inside the centre, where a short wait is possible in busy months, then join the queue for the lift. The building also has restrooms, cafes and a large shop, and the Niagara Parkway bus stops outside, so it is easy to reach from any hotel in Niagara Falls.
The tunnels behind the falls
The lift descends 38 metres through the limestone and shale of the gorge to the tunnel level, where you feel the vibration of the Horseshoe Falls before you see it. The passageways were first cut in 1889 to give Victorian visitors a view from behind the water, and informational panels along the walls explain how they were extended and rebuilt over the decades. The tunnels are cool and damp year-round, which is pleasant in summer and a reason to bring a layer in spring and autumn.
At the end of the passages two openings, the Cataract Portal and the Great Falls Portal, stand directly behind the sheet of water: all you see is a white wall of river pouring past at roughly 65 kilometres per hour, and all you hear is its roar. It is unlike any other view of Niagara Falls and the main reason the attraction is worth visiting.
The observation deck at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls
From the tunnels a passage leads out to the open-air observation deck at the base of the Horseshoe Falls, a two-level platform set against the cliff with the whole curve of the falls thundering down beside it. The spray here is constant, so everyone wears the recyclable poncho included with the ticket; on sunny afternoons the mist regularly produces a rainbow in front of the deck. This is the closest anyone can get to the foot of the Horseshoe Falls on land, and the photo from the deck is the one most visitors take away.
The lower level of the deck is closed during the winter months because of ice, while the tunnels and portals stay open. Most people spend about an hour in total between the lift, the tunnels and the deck before riding back up to Table Rock.
Planning your visit: hours, tickets and what is nearby
Journey Behind the Falls opening hours are 09:00 to 18:00 for the daytime ticket and 18:30 to 22:00 for the night ticket, when the Horseshoe Falls are lit in changing colours and the tunnel glows with the reflected illumination; queues are usually shorter in the evening. Your ticket is valid at any time within those hours on the date you choose, so you can fit it around a boat cruise or the Skylon Tower. Early morning and the last hour of the day are the best times to visit Journey Behind the Falls if you want the deck to yourself.
Everything else at the falls is within walking distance of Table Rock: the Clifton Hill attractions and the Rainbow Bridge are to the north along the parkway, the boat landing and the zipline are in between, and the Dufferin Islands lie just upstream. Paid parking is available beside the centre.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private experience?
It is a self-guided attraction ticket. You explore the tunnels and the observation deck at your own pace alongside other visitors; there is no guide.
How long does Journey Behind the Falls take?
About an hour, including the lift, the tunnels, the portals and the observation deck. Add time for the voucher exchange and the lift queue in busy months.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. You go directly to the Table Rock Centre at 6650 Niagara Parkway, which is served by the Niagara Parkway bus and has paid parking beside it.
What is included?
Admission to Journey Behind the Falls during the ticket's hours, the lift ride down to the tunnels, access to the viewing portals and the outdoor observation deck, a souvenir recyclable rain poncho and local taxes and fees. Food, drinks, parking and hotel pickup are not included.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option, and children aged 2 and under enter free with a paying adult.
Is it suitable for children and for reduced mobility?
Yes. It is one of the easiest Niagara Falls attractions for families, with lifts to the tunnel level and no stairs required; strollers and wheelchairs can reach the portals and the upper deck. Surfaces are wet, so hold small children's hands on the deck.
What should I bring?
Photo ID, your voucher on your phone, shoes with grip and a waterproof cover for your camera or phone. The poncho is provided, but a light rain jacket keeps you drier on the deck.
What is the best time to visit Journey Behind the Falls?
Early morning or the last hour before closing for the shortest queues, and sunny afternoons for a rainbow in the mist from the deck. The night ticket shows the falls illuminated and is usually quieter.
What happens in bad weather?
The tunnels and portals are underground and open in all weather; the outdoor deck may close in high wind or ice, and its lower level is closed in winter. The attraction itself does not close for rain.
Will I get wet?
Yes, on the observation deck the spray is constant, which is why the poncho is included. The tunnels and portals are damp but you stay mostly dry there.
Is Journey Behind the Falls worth it if I am also doing the boat cruise?
Yes. The boat approaches the falls from the river, while Journey Behind the Falls puts you behind and beside the curtain of water from the tunnels and the deck; most visitors do both.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date, the day or night option and the number of visitors in the booking panel on this page and send the request. Our team confirms your booking on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the voucher to show at the counter.
