Overview

This Niagara Falls night cruise is a 40-minute sailing after dark from the Canadian side that brings you to the foot of the falls while they are lit in colour and, weather permitting, while the fireworks go up above them. The default option is the evening illumination and fireworks cruise: you check in at the main ticket plaza on the Niagara River Parkway, ride the funicular down to the riverside patio, collect your souvenir mist poncho and board a large catamaran with an open 360-degree viewing platform and indoor areas. The boat passes the illuminated American Falls and holds position below the Horseshoe Falls. It is a shared cruise with no guide and no hotel pickup.

Full Description

The main ticket plaza and the funicular down the gorge

The evening starts at the main ticket plaza at 5920 Niagara River Parkway, a short walk north of the Rainbow Bridge and the Clifton Hill area on the Canadian side. Boarding begins about an hour before the cruise sails, and the first step is a ride on the funicular, an inclined railway that carries passengers from the top of the gorge down to the river in a few minutes with the lit falls in view through the glass. It is the only way down to the boat landing and is included in the ticket.

At the bottom you reach the riverside patio and the boarding area. Arrive at least 45 minutes before departure, because the gates to the funicular close 20 minutes before sailing and late arrivals cannot be admitted. The patio is open before and after the cruise, so many visitors come early to watch the colours change on the falls from river level.

The Niagara River after dark

Once the catamaran leaves the landing it enters the lower Niagara River, the fast green channel at the bottom of the gorge below the falls. At night the cliffs on both banks fall into shadow and the only light comes from the hotel towers on the Canadian rim, the Rainbow Bridge and the beams of the illumination hitting the water ahead. The deck is quiet apart from the onboard music and the growing roar of the falls, which makes a Niagara Falls night cruise feel very different from the daytime sailings.

The open 360-degree platform on the upper level is the place for photos, while the indoor observation areas have windows and seating for anyone who prefers to stay dry. The water in the basin is calm enough that the ride is smooth, even for first-time boat passengers.

The illuminated American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls

The first falls the boat approaches are the American Falls and, beside them, the narrower Bridal Veil Falls, separated from each other by Luna Island on the United States side of the river. The American Falls drop onto a slope of giant boulders that fell from the cliff in the twentieth century, and at night the coloured illumination picks out the spray rising from the rocks. The Illumination of the Falls has been a nightly tradition since 1925, when the first spotlights were switched on from the Canadian bank; today powerful LED lamps change the colours through the evening.

The boat slows here so passengers can photograph the full width of the American Falls lit in pink, blue, green or white, and the mist begins to reach the open deck, the first moment the poncho comes in useful.

The Horseshoe Falls and the Illumination of the Falls

The highlight is the Horseshoe Falls, the great curved cascade on the Canadian side, about 57 metres high with a crest about 800 metres long, where most of the river's flow pours into the basin. The catamaran pushes into the mist at its foot and holds position, so that the lit curtain of water fills the view on every side of the 360-degree platform. The spray at this point is heavy, which is why the souvenir mist poncho is handed out, and the roar is loud enough that most people simply stop talking and watch.

Seeing the Horseshoe Falls illuminated from the water is the best time to visit Niagara Falls for anyone who has already seen them by day: the colours change every few minutes and the darkness hides everything except the falling water.

The fireworks over the falls

On fireworks evenings the cruise is timed so the boat is on the water in the basin when the display begins above the falls, with the colour-lit Horseshoe Falls as the backdrop. The fireworks are launched from the Canadian bank and are a regular feature of the summer season, typically nightly in the peak months and on selected evenings in spring and autumn; the display is weather-dependent and organised separately from the cruise, so on nights it does not take place the cruise still sails and the illumination remains the main attraction.

After the display the boat returns to the landing, and you can linger on the riverside patio before taking the funicular back up. The lifts remain open after the last cruise, so there is no rush to leave the view of Niagara Falls at night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private cruise?

It is a shared cruise on a large catamaran. There is no guide; onboard music plays and the open 360-degree platform and indoor areas are shared with other passengers.

How long does the fireworks cruise take?

The sailing lasts about 40 minutes. Allow about 2 hours in total for check-in, the funicular, the cruise and the ride back up.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. You meet at the main ticket plaza at 5920 Niagara River Parkway, which is a short walk from most hotels near Clifton Hill and the Rainbow Bridge.

What is included?

The 40-minute evening cruise, the funicular ride down to the boarding area, a souvenir mist poncho, the fireworks seen from the water when the display takes place, onboard music and Wi-Fi, and access to the riverside patio. Food, drinks and tips are not included.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option and any child rate.

Is it suitable for children and for reduced mobility?

Yes. Children of all ages are welcome, and the boat is wheelchair-accessible with seating reserved for guests with limited mobility; the funicular avoids stairs on the way down to the river.

What should I bring?

A jacket, a waterproof cover for your camera or phone, and your booking on your phone. The poncho is provided, but closed shoes are better than sandals on the wet deck.

What time does the cruise sail?

About 21:30 from May to October and about 19:30 in November, so that the boat is at the falls for the illumination and the fireworks. Arrive at least 45 minutes before.

What happens in bad weather?

The cruise sails rain or shine with the illumination as the main attraction. The fireworks are cancelled in strong wind or storms and are not under the cruise's control, so no refund is given if they do not go ahead. If the river itself is closed, we rebook or refund your cruise.

Are the fireworks guaranteed every night?

No. The display runs on scheduled evenings in the season, typically nightly in summer and on selected nights in spring and autumn, and always depends on the weather. The illuminated falls are seen on every cruise.

Will I get wet?

Near the Horseshoe Falls the spray is heavy on the open platform, so wear the poncho or move to the indoor observation area to stay dry.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose your date and number of guests in the booking panel on this page and send the request. Our team confirms your booking on WhatsApp within minutes with the sailing time and check-in instructions.
