Full Description

Sea turtles in Cyprus

Cyprus is one of the most important nesting areas in the Mediterranean for the green turtle and the loggerhead, and both species live in the waters off Paphos. A turtle watching trip in Cyprus is one of the most popular nature activities on the island, but the animals are wild, so sightings are likely in season and never guaranteed. Your guide knows where the turtles feed and how to approach them calmly.

Turtles are protected, and responsible operators keep a distance, never touch or chase them and never feed them. The guide explains how to swim slowly and stay calm, so the animals stay relaxed. Seeing a turtle glide beneath you is a moving experience, and the small group size gives everyone a good view.

Snorkelling from the shore with sea scooters

This is a shore-based trip, with no boat: you enter the water from the beach, which keeps the day simple and eco-friendly. After a safety briefing your guide fits you with a mask, snorkel and fins, and shares a sea scooter, a small hand-held motor that pulls you gently through the water. There are only five to seven sea scooters, shared among the group.

Snorkelling with sea scooters in Paphos is a good choice if you tire quickly when swimming, because the scooter does most of the work. Floating noodles can be provided for extra support. The trip is for confident swimmers, and children must be good swimmers and supervised by a parent. Not recommended for people with asthma or heart conditions, or for those over 65.

Paphos coast and the Tombs of the Kings

The trip starts at the Tombs of the Kings archaeological site in Paphos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with underground tombs carved from rock more than 2,000 years ago. The meeting point is at the site's area on the coast, so you can combine the snorkelling with a visit to the tombs before or after. The Paphos coast has rocky shores, clear water and seagrass beds where turtles like to feed.

Transport is not included, so plan how to get to the meeting point, whether by taxi, rental car or local bus, and arrive a little early. Wear your swimwear under your clothes and bring a towel, because towels are not provided. Sunscreen is not included either, so use a reef-safe one.

When to go and what to bring

The trip runs from April, but turtle activity is at its best between May and November, so those months give you the highest chance of a sighting. The morning start at around 09:00 works well because the sea is usually calm and the light is clear. Your guide may change the exact spot on the day, according to sea conditions and where turtles have been seen recently.

Bring a towel, beachwear and sunscreen. A fruit snack and bottled water are included, and the guide takes photos of the turtles for you to keep. Feeding animals and touching marine life are not allowed. If you have a health concern, ask us before booking.
