Full Description
Kourion Archaeological Site
Kourion is one of the most impressive ancient sites in Cyprus, set on a clifftop high above the sea on the south-west coast. The city-kingdom flourished under Greek, Roman and early Christian rule, and its Greco-Roman theatre, first built in the 2nd century BC and later restored, is still used for performances today. The setting is breathtaking, and a Kourion tour is the highlight for anyone who loves ancient history.
Nearby is the House of Eustolios, a Roman villa with beautiful mosaic floors and bathing rooms, and the guide explains how wealthy citizens lived here. You spend about 75 minutes on site, so wear a hat and comfortable shoes, because there is little shade. Kourion tickets are included in the standard option.
Kolossi Castle
Kolossi Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress near Limassol, built in the 13th century by the Knights of Saint John and later rebuilt as a compact three-storey tower. It once controlled a rich agricultural estate, including sugar cane, and it remains one of the best examples of crusader architecture in Cyprus. The stop lasts about 30 minutes.
Entering the castle is optional and paid on site, so decide with your guide whether you would like to climb inside. Even from the outside the square stone keep makes a good photo. If you are researching a Kolossi Castle visit, note that opening hours change with the season and that the castle is a short stop, not a full visit.
Limassol old town and marina
Limassol is the second-largest city in Cyprus, and this tour gives you about two hours to explore. The old town has narrow streets, small squares, cafes and shops around the medieval Limassol Castle, where tradition says Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191. The castle today houses a museum of the medieval period.
From the old town you walk to the modern marina and the seafront promenade, a pleasant place for a coffee or lunch, though food and drinks are not included. A tasting session with local delicacies is part of the day, so you can try traditional Cypriot sweets and snacks. If you wonder what to see in Limassol in a day, this mix of old and new is a good introduction.
Aphrodite's Rock
Aphrodite's Rock, known in Greek as Petra tou Romiou, is a group of sea stacks on the coast between Limassol and Paphos. Legend says the goddess of love and beauty rose from the foam here, and the place is one of the best-loved photo stops in Cyprus. On the way back to Paphos the coach stops for about 30 minutes.
There is a viewing area, a small beach of pebbles and steps down through an underpass to the shore. Local tradition says that swimming around the rock three times brings luck in love, although swimming is only safe on calm days. The best time for photos is late afternoon, when the light is soft, which is when the tour usually arrives.
