Full Description

Karlovy Vary, the spa town in western Bohemia

Karlovy Vary, also known by its German name Carlsbad, lies in a wooded valley about two hours west of Prague. Legend says that Emperor Charles IV discovered the hot springs while hunting in the fourteenth century, and the town grew into one of the great spa resorts of Europe. Its grand nineteenth-century architecture in pastel colours lines the Teplá river.

Visitors often ask whether Karlovy Vary is worth a day trip from Prague. It is, if you enjoy elegant towns, gentle walks and a change from the capital. The coach journey takes around two hours each way, which leaves several hours in the town itself.

The Vřídlo geyser and the spa colonnades

The most famous sight is the Vřídlo, a geyser of hot mineral water that shoots up to about 12 metres from inside the Hot Spring Colonnade. Around the town you will see other colonnades, including the Mill Colonnade, where visitors traditionally sip spring water from small ceramic cups. Springs vary in temperature, and each has a slightly different taste.

On the guided walk your guide explains the history of the spa, its famous guests such as Tsar Peter the Great and the poet Goethe, and how the water was believed to heal. The guide also points out the best spots for photos and where to try the local mineral water.

Funicular and Diana Observation Tower

In the default option you ride the funicular up the wooded hillside to the Diana Observation Tower, which gives a wide view over the roofs of the spa town and the surrounding hills. The tower is a landmark of Karlovy Vary and a rewarding way to see the valley from above.

The funicular and Diana Tower are closed every year from 5 January to 6 February, so the programme may differ in that period. If you choose the audio-guide option, these tickets are not included, and you explore the town on your own with an app.

Free time and the return journey

After the guided walk you have free time to wander along the river, browse the shops and cafés or visit the churches, including the onion-domed Orthodox church above the town. Most visitors spend about four hours in Karlovy Vary in total, including the tour.

Your ticket also includes an entry to the Kingdom of Railways in Prague, a large miniature railway attraction that you can visit any time after the tour. The coach leaves from Na Příkopě in Prague and returns there in the evening, for a total of about nine and a half hours.
