Full Description

The Vltava and the Old Town Embankment

The Vltava is the longest river in the Czech Republic and the heart of Prague's cityscape; Bedřich Smetana's famous symphonic poem follows its course from the mountains to the capital. The cruise starts from the Old Town embankment near the Čech Bridge, whose Art Nouveau columns are topped by gilded stars, on the edge of the old Jewish Quarter.

Nearby stands the Rudolfinum, a neo-Renaissance concert hall completed in 1885 and the main stage of the Czech Philharmonic, whose façade glows beautifully after dark. A Prague river cruise is one of the most relaxing ways to see the centre: in 50 minutes you pass sights that would take half a day to walk between.

Charles Bridge and Kampa Island

Charles Bridge was begun in 1357 under Emperor Charles IV and for centuries was the only bridge across the river in Prague. It is over 500 metres long, rests on 16 arches and is lined with 30 Baroque statues of saints, most of them now copies. From the boat you see the bridge from below, with its Gothic towers at both ends, a view walkers on the bridge never get.

Just beside it lies Kampa Island, separated from the Lesser Town by the narrow Čertovka, the Devil's Stream, with an old water wheel and pastel houses right on the water. The best time for a Vltava cruise here is just after sunset, when the bridge lamps and the lights of the castle reflect in the river.

Prague Castle, the Lesser Town and Petřín Hill

From the middle of the river you see the whole length of Prague Castle along the ridge, crowned by the spires of St Vitus Cathedral, with the red roofs and Baroque domes of the Lesser Town below. On the riverbank you also pass the Straka Academy, the neo-Baroque seat of the Czech government, and on the hill to the south rises the Petřín Lookout Tower, built in 1891 as a small cousin of the Eiffel Tower.

Further along, the boat passes Štvanice Island, a green island with sports grounds between the bridges. Is a Prague evening cruise worth it? For photographs of the castle skyline, the calm of the river and a well-earned rest after a day of walking, most travellers find it one of the highlights of their stay.
