Full Description
Ras Mohamed National Park
Declared in 1983, Ras Mohamed was Egypt's first national park. It covers the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, where the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba meet, and its waters drop from shallow lagoons to reef walls hundreds of metres deep. Nutrient-rich currents feed some of the healthiest coral in the Red Sea.
On land the park has salt flats, mangroves and fossil reefs, but its real treasure lies underwater. Our boat takes about two hours to reach the reefs from the Sharm El Sheikh marina, sailing past the Sinai coast. A Ras Mohamed snorkelling trip is the best way to see the park if you are not a certified diver, and ID is required at the park entrance.
Snorkelling the Reefs of Ras Mohamed
The boat moors at two different reefs chosen on the day for calm water and visibility, often near famous sites such as Shark and Yolanda Reef or the Anemone City area. Here walls of hard and soft corals shelter clouds of anthias, parrotfish, triggerfish and schools of fusiliers, and turtles or napoleon wrasse sometimes glide past.
Instructors brief the group and swim with beginners, and life jackets are available for everyone. Is Ras Mohamed good for snorkelling? It is widely considered one of the finest snorkelling areas in the world, with visibility that often exceeds 20 metres. Allow about 1.5 hours at each stop, including time to rest on deck.
White Island
Inside the park, White Island is a slender strip of powder-white sand surrounded by shallow, turquoise water. It looks almost unreal from the boat, and when the sea is calm it is one of the most photographed spots on the Sinai coast. There are no buildings, just sand, sea and sky.
You spend about an hour here swimming, sunbathing or snorkelling along the nearby reef edge, a peaceful contrast to the lively coral walls. A White Island Sharm El Sheikh boat trip is perfect for families, as the shallow lagoon suits young swimmers. Bring sun protection, as there is no shade on the island.
