Full Description

Parc Astérix: a day in Gaul north of Paris

Parc Astérix opened in 1989 at Plailly, in the Oise, some 35 kilometres north of Paris and close to Charles de Gaulle Airport. The park is based on the comics by Goscinny and Uderzo, with hero Astérix and his friend Obélix fighting the Romans, and the whole site is designed like a series of themed villages rather than a plain fairground. It is one of the most visited theme parks in France and a natural answer to what to do with children outside Paris.

If you are researching a day trip to Parc Astérix from Paris, plan a full day: gates open in the morning, the park is large, and most rides run until early evening in high season. Arrive at opening time to do the popular coasters before the queues build.

Thrill rides: Toutatis, Oziris and Tonnerre de Zeus

For adrenaline the park has some of the best coasters in France. Toutatis is a launched coaster that shoots riders from a standstill to high speed in a couple of seconds, Oziris is an inverted coaster in the Egyptian zone, and Tonnerre de Zeus is a classic wooden coaster with steep drops in the Greek area. Goudurix, one of the first looping coasters in the country, is another favourite for teenagers.

Height restrictions apply to the bigger rides, so check the minimum heights at the entrance before children queue. Rides can pause in bad weather. Skip-the-queue passes are not part of this ticket, so use the early-morning and lunch-hour lulls to your advantage.

Family rides, water attractions and new for the season

Younger children have gentler rides, boat trips and playgrounds, and there are water attractions such as log flumes that are welcome on hot days. The park adds new attractions regularly: recent seasons have brought the Descent of the Nile, an Egypt-themed slide on inflatable rings, and the family ride Cétautomatix around the blacksmith's testing track.

The park stages live shows through the day, so check the timetable when you arrive and plan meals around them. Food, refreshments and games are not included in the ticket, so allow a separate budget or bring a picnic if the park rules allow it on your date.

Getting to Parc Astérix and planning the day

The easiest public transport route is the RER B train to Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport, then the park's shuttle bus, which runs in season. By car it is around 35 minutes from the centre of Paris via the A1 motorway; on-site parking is available but not included in the ticket. For the best day, check the opening calendar for your date, because the park is closed on many days in autumn and winter.

Your ticket is valid for one day only and gives entry to all zones, the rides and the shows. There is no hotel pickup, though there are hotels within the park grounds if you prefer to stay overnight. Wear comfortable shoes, use sun cream in summer and carry a light waterproof layer.
