Full Description

The Frauenkirche: from baroque landmark to ruin and rebirth

The Frauenkirche was built between 1726 and 1743 to a design by George Bähr, and its great stone dome, sometimes called the stone bell, defined Dresden's skyline for two centuries. In the bombing of February 1945 the church collapsed, and for nearly fifty years its pile of rubble stood in the middle of the city as a war memorial.

After 1990 an international effort began to rebuild it, using the original plans and thousands of salvaged stones. The work finished in 2005, when the church was reconsecrated. On our Frauenkirche Dresden guided tour you can spot the darker original stones among the new sandstone, a visible link between past and present.

Inside the church and the gallery views

The interior is circular and unusually bright, in soft cream, pastel and gold, with tiers of galleries rising toward the painted inner dome. The altar, carved with a scene from the Mount of Olives, and the organ are the focus of the room, and your guide explains how craftspeople rebuilt them.

The tour includes access to the galleries, where you look out across the space and up into the dome. The guide speaks German only in this option, so it suits visitors who follow German comfortably. Wear comfortable shoes, because some parts involve stairs.

Frauenkirche opening hours, tickets and how to get there

The Frauenkirche opening hours change during the day, because the church holds services, concerts and rehearsals, and visitor times are limited around them. That is why a guided tour ticket with priority entry is convenient: your slot is fixed and you skip the entry queue. Departure times are shown in the booking panel.

To get to the Frauenkirche, walk to Neumarkt in the Old Town. It is about ten minutes from the Semperoper and a short tram ride from the main station. Meet at the entrance shown on your voucher and arrive a little early, since tours start on time.

Around Neumarkt: what to see before or after

The square around the church has been rebuilt with reconstructed baroque facades, cafes and small shops. In front of the church stands a statue of Martin Luther, and a few minutes away you reach Brühl's Terrace, the Zwinger, the Procession of Princes mural and the Royal Palace.

The best time to visit is early morning for a quiet square, or late afternoon when the sandstone turns golden. If you would like an English or Arabic explanation of the area afterwards, ask us about our other Dresden tours, which are guided in those languages.
