Full Description
The Frauenkirche and the Neumarkt
Dresden's skyline is crowned by the stone dome of the Frauenkirche, the Church of Our Lady, completed in 1743 as one of the boldest Protestant churches of the Baroque age. It collapsed after the bombing of February 1945 and stood as a pile of ruins for almost fifty years, until it was rebuilt between 1994 and 2005 using many of the original stones, which you can still spot as darker blocks in the pale new façade.
Around it the Neumarkt square has been rebuilt with colourful Baroque townhouses, and nearby Brühl's Terrace, once called the balcony of Europe, overlooks the Elbe. The bus tour gives you the big picture, and afterwards you can return on foot: the Frauenkirche is generally open to visitors on most days outside services and concerts, and the climb to the dome viewing platform is one of the best things to do in Dresden.
The Zwinger, the opera house and Theatre Square
A few steps from the Frauenkirche lies Theatre Square, framed by three landmarks: the Zwinger, the opera house (Semperoper) and the Residence Palace of the Saxon electors. The Zwinger was built between 1710 and 1728 as a festive Baroque courtyard of pavilions, galleries and fountains, and today it holds the Old Masters Picture Gallery, a porcelain collection and a salon of historic scientific instruments.
The opera house, rebuilt after the war and reopened in 1985, is one of the most elegant theatres in Europe, while the Residence Palace houses the dazzling treasure chambers of the Green Vault. From the upper deck of the bus you see how closely these buildings stand together, which helps you plan where to buy Zwinger tickets or book an opera house visit later in your stay. Entry fees to monuments are not part of this tour.
The Neustadt and the hand-tiled dairy shop
Across the Augustus Bridge, the Neustadt, or New Town, is actually older than its name suggests: it was rebuilt in the Baroque style after a fire in 1685. Its grand Hauptstraße boulevard leads from the gilded equestrian statue by the river to Albertplatz, and beyond lies the Outer Neustadt, a lively district of cafés, street art and colourful courtyards, very different from the palaces of the Old Town.
The guide points out the Neustadt's most famous shop, Pfunds Molkerei, a dairy founded in 1880 whose walls, counters and ceiling are covered in hand-painted ceramic tiles. It is often called the most beautiful dairy shop in the world and is well worth a visit on foot after the tour, when you can step inside for its cheeses and fresh milk products. Seeing the Neustadt from the bus helps you decide which corner to explore next.
The three Elbe palaces
East of the centre, the bus follows the Elbe to the wooded slopes of Loschwitz, where three palaces stand side by side above the river: Albrechtsberg Palace, Lingner Palace and Eckberg Palace. Built in the mid-19th century for wealthy families and members of the royal house, they are surrounded by terraced gardens and give Dresden its romantic riverside silhouette, best seen from the opposite bank as the bus passes.
Two of the palaces are open to the public today, with parks, terraces and restaurants enjoying sweeping views over the river and the city skyline. Many visitors only discover the Elbe palaces of Dresden on this kind of tour, because they lie outside the compact Old Town. If you have time later, the riverside path along the meadows is a beautiful place to come back to on a sunny afternoon.
The Blue Wonder bridge and the Elbe meadows
The tour reaches the Blue Wonder, a steel cantilever bridge opened in 1893 between the districts of Blasewitz and Loschwitz. Its nickname comes from its blue paint and from the fact that it was an engineering marvel of its time, spanning the river without any pillars in the water. Nearby, a historic funicular and a suspension railway climb the hillside to viewpoints over the Elbe valley.
Along the way you see the wide green Elbe meadows that stretch through the city, kept free of buildings to protect against floods and loved by locals for picnics, open-air cinema and summer festivals. The Dresden Elbe Valley was once listed by UNESCO, and the panoramic tour shows why: river, palaces, wooded slopes and the Baroque skyline combine into one of the finest city landscapes in Germany.
