Full Description
The Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain
The Zugspitze rises to 2,962 metres on the border between Germany and Austria, in the Wetterstein range. From the summit platform you can see around 400 peaks across four countries on a clear day: Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. A small golden cross marks the true top, just above the viewing terraces.
Two routes lead up from the valley: the Eibsee cable car, one of the steepest in the world, and the Bavarian Zugspitze cog railway, which climbs through a tunnel to the Zugspitzplatt glacier plateau. The summit ride is not listed among this tour's inclusions and can be bought on the day. Many ask when the best time to visit the Zugspitze is: clear mornings in late summer and early autumn.
Eibsee lake
At the foot of the Zugspitze lies the Eibsee, a clear mountain lake whose water shifts from turquoise to deep green with the light. Small forested islands dot its surface, and the steep north face of the Zugspitze rises directly above it, making it one of the most photographed views in Bavaria.
A path of about 7 kilometres circles the lake, and even a short walk along the shore gives you beautiful views. The valley station of the Eibsee cable car is right here, so the lake is the natural starting point of a day trip to the Zugspitze from Munich. In summer the water is cool but inviting; in winter the lake can freeze over.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is two old market towns joined together for the 1936 Winter Olympics. The Olympic ski jump, rebuilt in 2007 with a sleek modern design, still hosts the famous New Year's jumping competition. Today the town is Germany's best-known Alpine resort for skiing in winter and hiking in summer.
In the Partenkirchen quarter, Ludwigstraße is lined with houses covered in Lüftlmalerei, the colourful painted façades typical of Bavaria. Nearby, the dramatic Partnach Gorge is a favourite walk. On this Garmisch tour you have time to stroll the old streets, visit a café and enjoy the mountain views.
