Full Description
Vigadó Square and the Pest riverbank
Your cruise starts at Dock 5 on Vigadó Square, in the heart of District V on the Pest side of the river. The square is named after the Pest Vigadó, a romantic-style concert hall opened in 1865 whose arched facade faces the Danube. In front of it runs the Danube Promenade, lined with hotels, tram line 2 and the small bronze statue of a little princess sitting on the railings, one of the city's favourite photo spots.
If you are wondering how to get to Vigadó Square, it is a short walk from Vörösmarty Square, the terminus of metro line 1, and tram 2 stops right on the embankment. Arrive about 15 minutes before your departure, scan your voucher at the gangway and choose your seat: the open upper deck is best for photos, while the lower deck stays warm on cool evenings.
The Chain Bridge (Széchenyi Lánchíd)
Minutes after leaving the pier the boat passes the Chain Bridge, the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary. It opened in 1849 and for the first time joined the separate towns of Buda and Pest, which merged with Óbuda in 1873 to form Budapest. Stone lions guard both ends, and the bridge was rebuilt after the Second World War and fully restored again in 2023.
At night thousands of bulbs trace its chains and towers, and from the river you see the bridge framed by the Royal Palace on the Buda side and the Art Nouveau facades of Széchenyi Square on the Pest side. This is the moment most people reach for their cameras on a Danube river cruise, so stay on the upper deck as the boat approaches and passes beneath the span.
The Hungarian Parliament Building
The Hungarian Parliament is the largest building in the country and the symbol of Budapest. Built between 1885 and 1904 in Gothic Revival style, it stretches 268 metres along the Pest bank, and its central dome rises 96 metres, a height chosen to recall the year 896 when the Magyar tribes settled in the Carpathian Basin. Inside are the Holy Crown of Hungary and a grand ceremonial staircase.
Seen from the water after dark, the white facade glows gold from end to end and is reflected in the river, which is why so many visitors call this the best view in the city. The boat slows here and turns, giving everyone time for photos. If you want to see the interior, a separate Hungarian Parliament tour with timed tickets is the way to do it.
Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church
On the return leg you sail beneath Castle Hill on the Buda bank. The long Baroque Royal Palace crowns the hill and today houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. A little further north stand the white turrets of Fisherman's Bastion, built between 1895 and 1902 with seven towers for the seven Magyar tribes, and the slender spire of Matthias Church with its colourful glazed roof tiles.
The whole Castle District, together with the Danube banks, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and from the river it looks like a single illuminated stage. Is Buda Castle worth visiting by day as well? Yes, and the funicular from the Chain Bridge makes it easy, but the floodlit view from this cruise is something you only get after sunset.
Gellért Hill, Liberty Bridge and the National Theatre
South of the castle rises Gellért Hill, 235 metres high and named after Saint Gerard, the city's patron saint. On top stand the Citadel fortress and the Liberty Statue, a woman holding a palm leaf, visible from almost everywhere in Budapest. At its foot the boat passes the green Liberty Bridge, opened in 1896, with mythical turul birds perched on its masts.
Further downstream you see the Bálna, a glass-and-steel structure shaped like a whale built over old riverside warehouses, and finally the modern National Theatre and its riverside park. Here the boat turns and heads back to Vigadó Square with a second look at the castle and bridges. This southern stretch is quieter, which makes it a good time to listen to the audio guide.
