There is no guide or commentary, so you can simply enjoy the views from the panoramic cabin or the open deck. Several departures run each evening. It is perfect for couples, families and first-time visitors who want the classic Budapest skyline.

Full Description

The Parliament and the Pest Embankment

The Hungarian Parliament, completed in 1904, stretches for almost 270 metres along the Pest bank, and at night its Gothic Revival spires and red dome are floodlit in gold, one of the most photographed views in Europe. The boat passes close enough for you to see the details of its façade, which is why the Parliament at night is the highlight of every Budapest Danube cruise.

Further south along the Pest embankment you pass the neo-Renaissance Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Vigadó concert hall from the 1860s, with its richly decorated façade facing the river. The banks of the Danube in Budapest have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, and the cruise is the best way to see the whole ensemble at once.

Buda Castle, the Várkert Bazár and Gellért Hill

On the Buda side, Castle Hill rises steeply from the water, crowned by the long Royal Palace, which now holds the Hungarian National Gallery, and the pointed spire of Matthias Church beside the white towers of the Fisherman's Bastion. At the foot of the hill lies the Várkert Bazár, a neo-Renaissance garden promenade by Miklós Ybl, beautifully restored and lit at night.

Further south, Gellért Hill carries the Liberty Statue and the old Citadel on its summit, and at its base stands the Art Nouveau Gellért Baths. From the river you appreciate how the city's two halves face each other: hilly, historic Buda and flat, grand Pest. This is the view that makes a Budapest night cruise worth it for most visitors.

The Bridges of the Danube

The cruise passes several of the city's famous bridges. Margaret Bridge, opened in 1876, bends in the middle to reach Margaret Island. The Chain Bridge, opened in 1849 as the first permanent bridge between Buda and Pest, is guarded by stone lions and outlined with lights at night. The white Elisabeth Bridge and the green Liberty Bridge, topped with mythical turul birds, complete the picture.

The best time for a Danube cruise in Budapest is just after sunset, when the sky is still deep blue and the lights are on; in summer that is the later departures, in winter the earlier ones. Budapest occasionally changes the colour of its illuminations for special events, so the lighting can vary.
